Bought my 13 135i msport in January with 69k miles. Luckily I haven't had to do much out of pocket as warranty covered the majority of the slew of issues she had here's everything warranty covered

Covered under warranty

Driver side headlight - stepper motor fault.

AC Evaporator

Blower Motor

Lower Oil Pan Gasket

Alternator

Oil filter housing gaskets

Things paid out of pocket

Spark plugs

Idler pulleys

Front brakes and rotors

Tires

Rear differential service

Front right lower control arm bolt loose

What it still needs

Transmission service

Brake flush

Diagnose suspension issue ( makes an odd popping noise and I can't pinpoint where it's coming from )

110,200 miles:

Clutch and Flywheel
Transmission Mounts
Front Brakes
Brake Fluid Flush
Control Arm Bushings
4-Wheel Alignment

Probably missed an opportunity to go HPA control arm bushings or M3 arms, but the rest was so much I couldn't think about extra for an upgrade.

Still need tires and hood-prop struts. Struts will be DIY; ties at end of summer unless something goes awry in the meantime.

I also missed one in here. Oil pan gasket had been seeping since I bought the car at 49k mi. Just a bit - never enough to note oil loss between changes. (Not like the OFHG!) Over the winter, oil leak got worse again. This time was the valve cover. Had both done, along with a lower oil line, a couple months back. Will try to track down date and mileage.

I've had my 2013 BMW 135 N55 for 2 years now. Bought it at 62000km and recently hit 84000km. Only thing I had to do besides normal maintenance is change the starter. It wasn't cheap but it has been quite reliable for me.

Heard so many horror stories about the N54, though it is a better engine, strictly performance wise. This being the reason I paid the extra $ to get a N55

2013 135i. Just rolled over 70k. Have done nothing but fluid changes, filters and tires since new. Still rocking original brake pads too.

90k miles on my 1M (N54T).

Problems I had:
- HPFP replaced free under extended warranty
- Fuel injectors replaced free under service bulletin
- Charge pipe blew off
- Coolant expansion tank replaced

That's about it. Everything else been standard and aggressive maintenance on my part.

Did you fix the wind noise? I have one too and its loud.

No not really. But for me the wind noise starts at 200 kph and gets really loud at 285 kph. But I have other things to concentrate at those hyper speeds.

I just started to have my HPFP go out at 160K kms. As soon as the weather gets warmer I will replace it myself.

Garage List
2008 E88 135  [10.00]
I'm original owner of 08 E88 135 6MT.
My first and only BMW. (Longer history with VWs) I have 165k DD miles and the engine/ transmission have no issues. No oil needs to be added between 8k mile oil changes. Original clutch. I had all the typical recalls done in the first couple of years and only odds and end issues since that I expect from an older car. I had a stage 1 Dinan tune done about 2 years ago. I'm constantly amused by the N54 "unreliability" comments that are shared. I drive aggressively but don't race (2 rear tires per each front replaced.) My biggest concern these days is the longer term stability of the electronics. Meanwhile I just keep AAA membership up to date.

Its hard to say for me since I've only owned the car for 2 and a half months. But in that time I've replaced the cracked valve cover which I'm pretty sure existed before me owning it, replaced all 6 plugs and coils due to a misfire. Car is just over 60k miles and I'm pretty sure I have several other small oil leaks either from the OFH and pan gasket but they aren't bad.

Just curious: which warranty company did you go with?

No issues so far with my N55/DCT...*knocks on wood*
It does have the beginnings of slight seepage from the VCG - at 90,300 miles. Not bad.

Thumbs down My 2012 135i M-Sport Build Date 7/2011

My car has had numerous problems:

Battery cable replaced
Bolts holding camshaft gears replaced
Transmission leaking, side cover gasket replaced
Transmission needed to be reprogrammed
Bad injector replaced
Water pump replaced
OFHG replaced
Valve cover gasket replaced
Air bag replaced
Pipe from turbo to intercooler replaced.
I'm on my second battery.
Driver's door seal replaced.

Currently the turbo seems a bit noisy. It sounds like a whining noise. It also might be the belt tensioner going bad?

I'm only shy a couple hundred miles of 50K. I don't know, but this seems to me a lot of repairs for any car.

I'll replace the tensioner myself! Stuff seems to wear out fast on my car. Maybe it was built on a Friday or is it a Monday?

My 135i is a 6 speed manual with the N55.

I asked my local BMW mechanic about what he thought of the car, and he said they were fantastic. The only thing was to make sure it was the manual and N55. They were mechanically less complex to work on.

Bought the car in 2019 with 79K miles on it. Had to fix the parking brake cable, replaced the brake pads. Several months later I got the air filters changed and the front tie rod assemblies replaced. Then came the wheel alignment right afterwards.

It definitely costs money to maintain, but its well worth it. But mine is mainly a weekend car. No major issues with my car.

I am not sure a poll really helps that much. The issues are so documented. BMW was on the bleeding edge with some parts of a very over engineered and strong n54 motor. Coil Packs, fuel pump and the water pump. All new tech. The old tech failure is the Oil Filter gasket and more. Those all failed at high rates. The n55 carried over the crappy fuel pump and the water pumps were a little better (my n55 made it to 75k before the water pump and fuel pump were toast). It is not a Camry, so I am not complaining. People tune these cars. That speeds up the failure of parts. So there are so many variables for how reliable the cars are. If you buy one and replace the bad parts, pretty solid. Luckily with resources like this forum, I do most of my repairs. My 1er is not my daily. If I had to count on a car for every day, I would drive a Honda. That's actually what I did. So a failure is just a fun puzzle to solve. Not everyone sees it that way. It is all relative to what you need, and what you expect.

Yeah it might not help in that way very much, but I always love giving up my opinion and being part of something haha and its still interesting to see the results I think, since I have heard so many bad things about the N55 but I myself havent had a single problem with it in 3 years now... we will see haha

My 135i had 2 previous owners. Kind of an interesting find, as my 2010 has an N55 engine, not the N54. I have read the N55 appeared in the 2011 models. Anyways, the previous owners definitely kept up with the maintenance. Mine was never tuned by the previous owners, so that made it easier for me.

Curious, are you sure the Model Year is 2010, and that's not the year the car was built?

Because it's true what you said. The N55 replaced the N54 in the 135i in MY2011.

My BMW is indeed a 2010. I purchased my vehicle from a BMW dealership near my home. When we were in their service center looking at the vehicle, the BMW mechanic confirmed it was a single turbo, dual scroll engine.

I was happy I got the N55, but yeah, I don't have an explanation as to why the N55 was put in there.

my hpfp was starting to fail, but i only knew it because i was monitoring my rail pressure while driving, and happened to notice once that it matched the lpfp pressure... but the car still drove fine! i replaced it and have been relatively trouble free before, and since
