This is completely beside the point, anyone anywhere in the world can have their own OBD key programmer, you just need money. A lot (most?) of the thieves use clone devices from China / eastern Europe, not official programmers from BMW.

Yes, but you still need the correct BMW OE keyfob, yes?

Are those being cloned in China / N Korea?

I would think that if both the keys and cloning devices were readily available on the criminal markets (either as stolen goods or pirated hardware), we'd have an identical problem here in the USA. But we don't to my knowledge.

So I kinda think it might be the general availability of keys in the EU compared to the tight dealer control of keys in the USA (and maybe elsewhere).

I am guessing it is because of proximity to where the thieves would want to ship them, with most of them probably going to Russia or the Ukraine and perhaps some to other authoritarian countries such as N. Korea.

So the "Russian Mafia" has nothing to do with the rampant thefts of high end automobiles in Europe?

Noop! You only need the key cloning machine ($10K) and the will or balls to break into a car at the owners haus. In a few seconds the car is yours. IF the car has a factory alarm system... the system will not trigger(go off) as long as you follow the A-pillar line down to the OBDII port - thats how these cars are getting stolen. See the videos in the bellow link. Its a big problem - in ALL markets. Just that in the USA it doesn't get the press coverage. Also... BMW AG came out with a SW update that limits the car to only recognize TWO key fobs. But you have to request this key fob update/upgrade.

Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for your support and advices.
Time to give some news of my beloved 1M.

It went to my dealership for the latest software upgrade and had the automatic window-drop deleted, same for the "key less access" for opening the doors (closing and engine start is still working though). I had to specify what they had to do because they had no clue about the problem...how surprising.

This done, I had the lock replaced, both keys replaced, door repainted (4 wheels as well, took the opportunity) and locked-up the car in the "secret garage" with the rest of the collection (with the "other" M-Coupe...Z3 S54).
I don't plan to drive the car until I have a proper GPS tracker installed, probably next spring.

Thanks again and don't forget to protect as much as possible your 1M!

Did you guys see this...thieves stole a Mercedes with a relay device...

https://news.sky.com/story/relay-cri...bbery-11145015

That's why I also store my keys inside a metal box at night...and inside a smaller metal box when I'm on the road...

I keep all of my keys in a metal box, and the spare keys are hidden elsewhere and wrapped in layers of aluminum foil for this same reason. It also helps if you can garage your cars and have a way to deactivate the garage doors except when you want to use them, although this would be impractical for many people.

EU/Russia will always be ahead of USA in RE unless it's State sponsored. They're just not as open or speak in non-English forums which is why you will never hear about it.
The same goes for tuning, which is basically RE.

A lot of these attacks, are common across a lot of wireless technologies.

It would pain me a lot if mine were stolen, but that is what insurance is for.
