I got the call today that my car had been updated and it's in my garage now.
I probably didn't need to go and get the loaner. The service manager said that no BMW's have experienced an airbag-related injury. YMMV, but I prefer to err on the side of caution when it comes to my baby.
Off topic, but I've got my eye on that too...

I just spoke with my dealer again, still "no parts available".

Interesting to hear that some are getting them replaced though it sounds like the replacements are not a new part number. The same (faulty) airbag just a new unit...

Hopefully we all get ours before Takata goes bankrupt. I think they finalized on a $1 billion settlement for the US this week.

Sounds like they are taking care of people that complain however .. so if you're that type of guy ... go ahead. It does make sense that they will fix the squeaky wheels with some fresh grease .. those people will still be on the list for a replacement unit .. and the dealer gets to bill the tab to BMW and also gets a new/old airbag off the shelf as well. When the new replacements are available they will probably send out notices to replace all old airbags.

I wouldn't expect a second loaner on your second replacement however since it's not really in any danger of failing , unless you are reading this 5 years or more from now
I got one of the loaner airbags in my ZHP because it is 13 years old and came from South Carolina. They classified my car because of age and coming from hot climate as level 1 priority. Then they told me that the risk goes up with age and humidity so a new airbag is safer. The 1M is newer but I believe they are prioritizing cars from hot climates. I did not complain but did contact BMW because someone told me that they were fosusing on hot climate older cars. Since th car is in California now, I didn't want them to forget it. Sure enough they said that my ZHp is top priority due to their risk index.

I didn't mean to be a squeaky wheel it was just that both my cars are under the recall and I have kids too. So it's probably true that if you ask they will do something but it will probably depend on where you are located. Older cars from hot and humid climates get top priority. Just sharing my experience.

Thanks. I just sent a message to my dealer earlier today about my 2004 325 that my daughter drives. I'll try and post back here what the response was.

Old car? - check
Hot climate ? - check

Yes. Top level. I actually called them about 1M airbag because I don't get recall notices since 1M is Canadian. She told me not to worry 1M is newer and not from hot climate. I only have to worry about older cars so I said what about my 2003 330i from South Carolina. She said oh! If it was me I wouldn't drive it and to contact my dealer and they would get me a newer airbag. I feel better now because I carry kids in 330i anyway. Yes, I would definitely get your daughters car updated! Good luck!

As an FYI, any BMW with the recall on it, cannot be sold by a BMW dealer until the part is replaced. So here is how it works if you have a BMW with a recalled airbag...

1. Dealer takes your car in on trade and then gets on a priority wait list for the part. They will get the part - not right away, but they will get it. My dealer said it sometimes is a month or two - maybe three.

2. Dealer has to sit on your car during that time - they are no longer compensated by BMW for this.

so...

3. Dealer will low ball your trade, because they are stuck with a car they can NOT sell until it is fixed.

For me, that was an offer of $52,000 on a 1M with 4,000 miles. Kind of glad they did that, cause I still have the car and cannot wait to drive it!

I just got mine replaced with the final version today. I was told that there are not enough new ones for a public release. Instead they are prioritizing Gulf state cars as we discussed. I did not specifically request it. I called them because I am not receiving recall notices due to an issue with BMW's system. They cannot fix it immediately so they told me they would give me the fix now so I don't get missed due to the notification issue. The sent the new bag to my dealer and just drove home with it. So it's nice to know the fix is in albeit in limited supply.

air bag recall

I am in British Columbia Canada and I have a bmw 135i, 2013. The dealer told me I could make an appointment for March and it will be done. I have an appointment for March 6, so we will see if it happens.

Cool. As I said the risk is with older hot climate and high humidity cars so they will probably do 2008 2009 1 series before 2011 1Ms

That's actually pretty cool that they accommodated your unique situation and prioritized replacement for you given the risk of being overlooked. Score one point for restored faith in humanity ...

Yes, I am blown away by it. I did not call to ask for an airbag, simply that they find a way to get safety and recall notices to me since a few of us with Canadian cars in the US. They offered me the bag to ensure I don't fall through the cracks because of the unique situation. Otherwise, I would keep having to call and it's difficult because the BMW phone people use the USA computer system to track these but I'm not on it!

Very happy and Kudos to BMW!

Excellent news. I will be calling my dealer. I would think that my location would classify as priority, pretty hot and humid here in Houston.

I rarely drive mine so I didn't care how long it was going to take
