I was told the same. Though, I am not looking forward to -30 weather to find out for sure. I have heard of people using glue on oil pan heaters though.

I was told the same thing from my dealer; the 135i doesn't need a block heater but it does come with a Trickle Charger. He said this will be fine even in Winnipeg's -40 degree celsius weather.

Ouch! I lived up north for a few years and experienced -40 and I would want a block heater! Even with the block heater it is amazing how the weather screws everything up...squared off tires, transmission that shifts like it has cement in it, shocks that don't work...all fun. I would want one if it was me.

You could always just use a 100 watt trouble light (or two) under the hood. The heat from the bulbs might be enough. Same for the battery, throw a 40W incandescent in the compartment. Or use a trickle charger. You might also be able to get an electric 'battery blanket' - these used to be available. Batteries lose a lot of their cranking power below zero, so keeping the battery warm will definitely help. What have 335 owners done in Winnipeg? |

Ask the parts counter if they make one. If yes, that's your answer. I have also been up north at -40 and much colder. Better yet, find out the number for the farthest North BMW dealer, and call them. THEY WILL KNOW FOR SURE!!!
Example here I tell ppl I am from the North, they say... Oh Barrie? (that's 1 hour north) I tell them Timmins... Huh is the reply. (that's 8 hours north) Speak to the ppl in the environment you plan to be in. I would only trust their answer. Even a block heater does not cut it in every environment. I know lots of ppl who have heaters in their car. Many have remote starters so they don't even have to go out in the cold to warm the car. -60 to -80 is serious stuff. EspressoBoy |

Does anyone park their BMW outside in cold weather? Shouldn't you have a garage if you drive a BMW?
I have not used a block heater for more than a decade now. It's sheltered @ home and I can never find anyone providing plug-ins when I'm away. |
