Question: How do I figure out what needs to be replaced in my Xenon headlight?

Hey guys!

Thanks for your time. I have two warnings in my car, Adaptive failure and low beam malfunction. My driver side headlight is working fine, but my passenger side low beam (d1s) went out (angel eyes work fine), bought new bulbs and they did not work as well. So, it has to be the ballast or/and the Adaptive control unit, unless there’s something else it could be and I don’t know. If it could be please let me know. The headlights are really the only thing on the 1er that I couldn’t tell u more then u wanted to know.. LOL.

Then how do I go about checking which is bad and needs to be replaced? If it’s just one I don’t want to replace more then what’s needed. Also trying not to buy a whole new headlight if I don’t have to. But, if it comes to that, at least I tried.

Thanks a bunch guys!

Is there moisture in the headlight assembly? My wife's car had the same failures. They appeared after running it through a car wash.

I removed the headlight from the car and used a floor vent in the house to dry out the assembly. I cleaned the ballast connectors on the headlight assembly with CRC electrical connector cleaner. Then I replaced the ballast with a used one I bought on eBay. Finally I replaced the damaged rear cover with a new one. Then I reinstalled it into the car.

Finally I said a short prayer to the car gods, crossed my fingers and started the car. No warning lights and everything worked as intended.

I hope this helps.

Nice! Glad it worked out. I check all the time and have never seen water in the unit. But I’m sure that’s what did it. Noticed that after my car was at the shop for a HPFP the cover to the headlight wasn’t secured correctly, only one locking pin was attached. Now, I noticed it soon as I got the car home the same day. But I’m not holding my breath.

Did you have both warnings? Adaptive and low beam? And did the new ballast fix both warnings? Thanks a bunch brother!

Yes, both warnings. Passenger side failure too. I bought the car used and it turned out that the rear cover was damaged and not installed correctly. That's what triggered the lights. But the corrosion indicated the problem had been building for a while.

Okay very nice, so the ballast ended up fixing both codes? That makes me feel a little better. Do you mind if I ask what the ballast cost you? And you said u found it on eBay correct?

Thanks again man! Appreciate it!
