Hello from Wisconsin - Newish 128i Owner

Hello everyone.

New to the E82 chassis, but not to BMW's. Just wanted to post and say hello to everyone. My name is Jesse and I am from the Milwaukee area.

I picked up a 128i last month in Atlanta and drove it back to Wisconsin. The trip was awesome and I was able to hit Tail of the Dragon on my way home. Here are some pictures of my new commuter car.....

At the tree of shame:

Since buying it I have sold off the ZHP wheels and put on my TRM 17x9 wheels with 245/40 Michelin PSS tires from my E36 M3. Here are a couple pictures of the new setup:

And here is one of the 128's garage mates, my E36 M3 track toy:

Nice to see another new 128i with an owner who seems like they'll drive the car.

Can't wait to see what else you'll do, or if you'll just keep it clean.

PS-I really like the JDM-look wheels (for lack of better term) on the 1'er...

Welcome to the family! I grew up in the Milwaukee area and Jenny Morgan has worked on my beloved and departed E36 (when she was still at LCS, I knew those folks back as far as the early 80s). And also like you, I bought my E82 in Atlanta (flew there and drove the car back to Tampa-ish, that was one long day).

Welcome! Car looks great. I'm personally a fan of the TE37 style but I think the car needs to be lower for them to look right on the e82's

Yes, the cold is horrible. I am a mechanical engineer and love cars/motorcycles. I only live here since that is where my work is. You can probably guess where I work. Think Black and Orange.

Yeah, I can understand the cringing that some people may have when they see "JDM" wheels on a Euro car. I am a past Japanese car fan though, so that is the style I personally like. I am also a form follows function person (engineer and analytical), and these wheels from Tire Rack are fantastic for the price. 17x9 and 19 pounds.....and only $130 each.

It was a killer deal. Asking price was $7500, and I picked it up for $6800. No rust and the body is in fantastic shape. Not perfect, but unbelievable clean for a sub $7k car.

This one will be driven for sure. I put 30k miles a year on my vehicles, and this 128's main purpose is to provide me a comfortable daily that can keep miles off of my E36 M3. The 128i will also be saving the E36 M3 from the torturous Wisconsin winters.

I usually can't leave anything alone, so I will be updating this thread with future modifications. I just need to be mindful of spending too much $$ on it, since that means less money to spend on E36 M3 modifications or track time. One big modification that I will be doing is a LSD. Leaning toward the M Factory Helical right now, and will be adding that before Fall.

Lowering the car is something I am considering. My problem is that I am trying not to spend money on the 128i, since that means less funds available for motorcycle, E36 M3, and track days. Lowering springs would also mean camber plates for the front, since I had to do a major roll/pull on the front fenders in order to fit this wheel/tire setup (245/40 on 17x9). The wheels are +45 offset, and I am using a +7mm spacer.....so an effective offset of +38. The 128i is also mainly a commuter car, and is supposed to provide my body a break from the E36 M3, which is heavily modified and has a jarring ride.

I also like the JDM look of these wheels, but I can understand why some don't. I also had a similar style wheel on my old RX-8:

Great to see another 128!

I flew to Colorado to get mine and drove back to Texas with it. And then drove it to California when I moved out here! Incredibly fun car to drive, I can’t get enough.

And I would add, "most excellent BMW mechanic". I read her always in Roundel primarily because of her knowledge & ownership of a car like mine, a 325iX. I got the chance to meet her and talk with her at October Fest 2008 in Watkins Glen. Without a doubt she would know the best garages in the Milwaukee area. She continues to be a BMWCCA Technical Service Advisor whom CCA members can call upon for help. Just one of the very many advantages of being a BMWCCA member.

Bought this carbon fiber spoiler off of eBay and received it this past weekend:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-07-13-E...72.m2749.l2648

Here is the fitment when just sitting the spoiler on the trunk lid:

Are the gaps at the ends typical, or does this spoiler have horrible fitment. I am a little unsure how much sanding/modifying is typical for an eBay spoiler. I assumed it wouldn't be a perfect fit and would require some tweaking....but this seems extreme. What does the E82 community say?

Sand/modify?

Or return that horrible fitting spoiler?

Depending on the vendor, you could probably get an exchange or refund. You could also use a heat gun and carefully heat it and shape it to the trunk lid.

The vendor does have a return policy, but I would pay for return shipping. Any idea if carbon fiber will respond to a heat gun and allowed to be shaped? I have never worked with carbon fiber before.

I don't know, but low135 was possibly modifying a spoiler to fit his 'vert (different shaped trunk), maybe he'll spot my mention and let you know...

Thanks Chris. I am using a coupe M4 style spoiler on my vert. Mine is ABS (not carbon fiber) however which is much more responsive to heat. After the resin cures in carbon fiber parts it is very regid. I don't think there is a recommended rehating process for reshaping.

I'll also say that you're already starting out with something that looks defective. My spoiler isn't even made for my car and fits better
