There's no comparison, the N55 sounds better.
The N54 135i exhaust system has two catalytic converters, while system of N55 135i's uses just one. Prior to the B58 replacing it, the N55 was one of the loudest and best sounding modern BMW engines, specifically in a 135i because the car has a short wheelbase and overall length, and the exhaust system itself is nice and open, even with the factory M Sport muffler. Almost every other N55 application had an individual dual exhaust with an individual tailpipe on each side of the rear bumper. The 135i is compact and uses a single pipe for a few portions, making it one of the loudest BMWs in factory form. Add the BMW Performance exhaust with the Y-pipe to take it to its full potential. |

I've owned both. The N55 definitely sounds better for sure. It's louder and has a more V8ish tone than the N54 - at least inside the cabin. However, the N54 doesn't sound bad at all.
I still miss the N54 though. It had a fun power delivery that brought out your inner hooligan. Don't miss the maintenance though lol. |

Stock for stock N55 all day. Modified the N54 has some easy bonuses like the ability to put a real BOV on it.
However my favorite combo with either, since at the end of the day they'll sound identical, would be a full sing top-mount turbo swap with full exhaust.

both cars sound wicked with catless dp(s) and upgraded pipes back from there. I'd assume stock it's n55 easily since n54 guys use our mids. My vrsf catless dp with stock mids and a berk street axleback sounds crazy at wot, reminiscent of a 1JZ.

Since this isn't in the N54/N55-specific forum, I'll say stock, the turbo cars sound better, but modified (correctly) the N52 sounds best. More pure, raw, zingy sound than the turbo cars, but lacks the utter brutality.

N54/N55 with performance exhaust sounds like a mini v12 if you ask me, especially with aftermarket turbos (for some reason).

Not sure what the point of this thread is.
Are you considering buying one or the other based on which engine people think sounds better? They do sound different, but most of that is dictated by the exhaust setup (secondary cats or no). Once you put the same exhaust on them, you'd be hard pressed to tell much difference - not like the N55 vs S55.
