M Button - OK to always run it?

I've never owned a car with sport/econonomy modes (M Button). Honestly, I don't know why you would want the car so detuned when it's out of Sport mode. Obviously, I much prefer the crisp responsiveness of the car in the Sport Mode with M button ON and am wondering if I should have any concerns other than perhaps decreased MPG by running the car in M mode pretty much all the time.

Is there a way to default the M Button ON upon start up?

Yes, it is fine and no, you have to do it manually.

The car feels phenomenal with the M mode activated! You will not experience any trouble in using the car in M mode at all times.

I don't know if I would call the non-M mode 'economy'.

It's not like you're getting passed by bike messengers when the M button is not pressed.

The M mode only affects throttle response. There's no increase in power, so any changes in fuel economy are a result of the right foot.

M mode does not effect fuel economy, your driving habits do...

From what that interview with the head of M engineering said, MDM keeps the turbos spooled up in the optimal range and that it would affect your fuel economy. I suppose more engine braking?

Since when does M Dynamic Mode have anything to do with turbos or the engine for that matter?

MDM just allows the stability control to be less intrusive.

MDM (M Dynamic Mode) has to do with handling. It loosens up your DSC.

The M button on the steering wheel sharpens up throttle response.

Not according to the head of M Engineering.

By selecting the Sport or Sport plus accelerator mode, we can really feel the additional boost to the response. How does that work?

In Sport or Sport plus mode, a suitable VALVETRONIC controller and the waste gates keep the turbocharger in the higher speed range. Normally, the waste gate used to regulate the charging pressure opens so that the exhaust gas flows out with the minimum possible loss. Pressure is built up again only when I hit the accelerator. For an improved response, I leave the waste gate closed until I need it for regulating. The exhaust gas then always passes over the turbine, which then runs at a considerably higher speed. When even more power is demanded, it is immediately available. However, I have a gradually rising counterpressure that causes a slight rise in consumption. This function can therefore be switched on and off. By the way, in the BMW 1 Series M Coupé the same function is activated at the M Button.

You're looking at the wrong engine.

Did you even look at the quote above?

He asked about the M button on the steering wheel so what I said above is true.

No, what you said is not true because you do not seem to understand the difference between MDM (which is activated by pressing the DSC button once in the 1M) and the 'M' button on the steering wheel.

I only corrected your statement about the MDM claim.

I was incorrect in saying that your quote did not apply to the 1M.

The only difference between M mode and non-M mode is the amount of gas you'll be drinking. Keep it on all day long if you wish.

I don't know of anyone doing this on a 1M, but when I owned a MINI Cooper S, someone built and sold a kit that would turn the Sport mode on whenever you started the car by wiring a relay into the circuit for the sport button. I got one and it worked well. Here's a post about it from the NAM site: http://www.northamericanmotoring.com...ton-mod-2.html

I imagine that something very similar should be possible for the 1M. Some enterprise person could sell a kit for this and make some money.
