How wide of a tire can I go on 17x8s?

Recently acquired a 2011 bmw 128i with m-sport suspension/package and it came with some 2014ish 3series black rims that are 17x8s.

Trying to figure out if I can fit 255/45r17 for rear tires. Was thinking 215/45/17 fronts and 255/45r17 rears.

If you go on Tire Rack and look up the tire you want in a 255 you can click on the "specs" tab and one of the boxes will be for rim width range. That's, generally, the safe width range for the tire to operate as designed.
