FYI: I'm not posting this just to bash on the 2-series (although it's a car i really do dislike after driving several), but i am primarily posting this because i feel the 1-series is getting the credit it deserves in reviews these days.

So, has BMW lost its edge? With the 2 Series, we believe so. There's little arguing that this is a more comfortable, refined and, most importantly, livable vehicle than the car it replaces. But the cost of these improvements is steep. The 228i xDrive isn't only less enjoyable; it's less interesting. And for that reason alone, unless you need all-wheel drive on your small coupe, there are better-equipped, more entertaining vehicles that offer the charm and personality that the old 1 Series had in spades.

I wish I saw this thread before I did my little comparison. I definitely agree though, the m-sport 230i xdrive I had as a loaner car really wasn't anything special. I think most of the problem really does come from the steering. The steering in that car was a joke. However, the engine was lovely and the transmission was a masterpiece. I was really truly impressed with both. And the proportions of the car were perfect, not too big and not too small. In my opinion the 1er is just slightly too small and the e9x is slightly too big. The 2 series was just right. I hope I get a chance to drive a rwd m235i/240i to really get a feel for a proper 2 series

The M2 is the proper 2-Series
If I drove an M2 the question wouldn't be if it's a proper 2 series, the question would be if it's a proper M car.

I think it's both. Check out my post where I link to an M2 beating the M4 (proper M car) on the track:
