DIY electric water pump VIDEO for N-series (N51/N52.N54/N55) engines...
BavAuto put together a great video on how to replace the electric water pump/thermstat in our car. Plus the car in their video was a 135i, so its quite an interesting video!

HondaGoneRogue be sure to post up some pics of the R&R-ing of the water pump for us 1Addicts.
Btw... your still in K-town right>? I am starting the planning phase of our summer Alpine Pass tour. So keep a look out in the European forum soon. I'm thinking of mid to late July for our tour.

Got the water pump swapped out. It took a little less than two hours following the video exactly. I didn't take pics because I was very rushed to get it done (working two jobs at the moment), and so I just flew through it. VERY straightforward. There were no surprises at all. All clamps and couplings came right off. Everything was able to come off with only a 1/4" drive ratchet, which made things a lot easier considering the small space you are working in.
I can't believe what the dealer chargers for this. Maybe I should go into that business haha.

Starting mine today! Pump and t-stat.
Update: Completed successfully! Got sold the wrong t-stat (128i) and only noticed when I tried to re-install as they look almost identical. Had to scramble around on Saturday to pick one up from the local BMW dealer (who gave me a nice discount...thanks Maranellow BMW!). I did it all with the car up only on ramps, which didn't leave a ton of room underneath leading to lots and lots of cursing (sorry neighbours!). I have to say that without those videos from Bavauto, I would have taken one look at where the pump is and just given up! Just an excellent excellent video! Great video and really not too bad of a job. I did mine using ramps and it made things a little tight. If you have access to a lift or jack stands, all the better. The worst part was disconnecting/reconnecting the hose form the radiator to the thermostat. It's positioned in such a way that you can't get any leverage and is pretty tight on the thermostat.

Because no one wants to go back in there. Mechanical thermostats fail so I don't think an electronic one is any more reliable. I would replace the thermostat - IF it were my car.

My water pump failed a few months ago and had no choice but to get a tow to the dealer and have them replace it. They told me my thermostat was still good, so they only replaced the water pump. I'm thinking I should replace my thermostat soon. Probably as soon as it gets nice out. Looks like I'll still have to remove the water pump? Anything else I should replace other than the aluminum water pump bolts?

Dackelone, if the dealer replaced the water pump bolts too when they replaced the pump, do I still need to get new ones when I switch out the thermostat?

Yes, you should replace them. The bolts are only good once. They are allu and will stretch once torqued. To be safe I would buy new bolts.

Btw... Looks like my waterpump is on its was out. I have a small coolant leak under the front of the engine. I don't see any coolant when I park my 135i, but I can see coolant at the front of the engine/radiator - inside the belly pan. A friend of mine who is a BMW tech says its very common for the e-pump's to develop a leak at the casting seam.
I'm at 124K kms - with my US spec 135i. :/
