Keeping the wheels clean

Since our 1Ms are bestowed with beautiful yet hard-to-clean wheels, can fellow enthusiasts share tips on keeping them clean?

The excessive brake dust collection on the wheels is quite annoying.

e.g. Experience with different types of wax/spray, brake dust shield, manual/powered cleaning tools, etc.

Thanks!

I use

Sonax, a wheel stick to get the barrel and a protective coating on it to keep the wheels from accumulating alot of dust.

Wheel protectant

ArmorAll Wheel Protectant will keep them clean for weeks. There have been threads here on that, and you can check out youtube videos for customers who show with/without comparisons. The stuff is great.

I just pretend like my wheels turn into gunmetal finish every week and then I wash them back to bright silver.

It's like having two sets of wheels!

How effective is that wheel stick on these spokey wheels? Or should I stick with a hand brush?

Your best bet is going to be three tools:

A interior wheel brush similar to that shown above. Or something like this:

http://www.detailedimage.com/DI-Brus.../Full-Size-S1/

A large boar's hair brush to clean the outside of the tire and wheels:

http://www.autogeek.net/8inmoorbohaw.html

A small detail boar's hair brush for the wheel bolt and spokes:

www.autogeek.net/lug-nut-brush.html

I also usually spray a wheel cleaner on my wheels prior to scrubbing with regular car shampoo, I am partial to Einzett, but there are other good products out there too. The key point here is you want to be sure you use something that does not strip wax.

http://www.1z-usa.com/einszett_wheel_cleaner.html

Be very careful with wheel cleaners, many are designed to get dirt off at all costs. The heavy detergents used will strip your wax and in some cases damage the finish of the wheel.

Finally, once you have them cleaned up apply a high temperature wax or sealant. I am partial to FK 1000p. Its cheap, easy to apply, lasts forever and rated for higher temps. Higher temp rating is important when it comes to wheels because your brakes and tires can get hot, this heat radiates out to the wheels and can cook off regular wax and sealants.

**Edit: Once properly sealed your wheels will be WAY easier to clean and maintain moving forward.

Hand brush the stick just strictly to get in the barrel.

My normal approach too, however after more than a year of use, it's great stuff. Massively better than more boutique products, or useless products like Wheel Wax. Even holds up to track use pretty well and lets me clean the wheels on both cars with water and ONR, no need for wheel cleaner.

I've never had issues with it slinging either, but only use it when I can let it dry overnight.

i saw this lady driving a 5 series with some really really dirty wheels. I am like" well lady, you always wanted gunmetal-colored wheels, and you got them".
I use Adam's wheel and tire cleaner on my wheels. It is not too harsh; that is what I like about it. And it does the job really well.

Can you post some close up high resolution pictures of your wheels and barrels of your wheels?

I waxed my wheels when they were new with Wheel Wax. 2 coats. Now they clean up very easily, but having said that, my 4 wheels take almost as long as the rest of the car.

Just curious how often do you need to apply it?

Use Rejex on your wheels. And only wash your wheels with car wash soap and not wheel cleaner so you don't strip it.

Works well on keep brake dust from accumulating and easier to wash off.

I'll try that Wolf's wheel product to see if it's any better than Rejex. With Rejex on track wheels we can go a year and the brake dust still comes off easily with car wash soap.

I reapplied it every 3 months when I detailed the car. Never let it go further than that.

Musclez -- where do I buy this wheel cleaning attachment? What are the cleaning elements made of (material)? Love the 1M wheels, but they are tough to clean, especially the barrel. Thanks.

Oops, sorry for double post, 18 month old kid! I agree that in general to avoid armor all. However, the wheel protectant is excellent. I have tried many products and it is great and cheap. And no slinging grease if used as directed.
