At one point in my life I owned both a Datsun 1600 Roadster (with some pretty cool junk yard finds like the cast, ribbed, aluminum oil pan) and (for 14 years) a fairly rat-rod Datsun 510.
Sh*t happens. I'll try my best not to let sh*t happen again. The 128i is a keeper.

I'm putting my PE back on this weekend and I'm picking up a mod from a local. Looks like I'm back on the e82 train for now hah!
I might go with some facelift halogen headlights and retrofit LED bulbs. It looks like a couple companies have come out with LED bulbs specifically designed for reflector housings to optimize output and minimize glare to other drivers. Does anyone know if the eyebrow on the halogen LCI headlights illuminate? I'm also casually shopping for style 216's or some stock 207's. |

Well, today was the day to say goodbye to my faithful 1er.
It's on its way to the East Coast and into the hands of another enthusiast. I had an UNBELIEVABLE amount of interest in the car but no one came through for a couple months. I parted with a few items (headlights, blacklines) to try to sell it but came to terms with keeping it in the beginning of March. I even contacted a local to buy some LCI tails and looked into getting some Euro halogens to mix things up. The local guy flaked and never replied back. I even posted a WTB ad for style 216s. But alas it wasn't meant to be and it's on the back of a truck now. With all of the interest in the car and limited production numbers, I'm positive 128i's in similar spec will be quite desirable in 5-10 years. I'm still kicking myself for letting it go but it didn't make sense to keep. On a positive note, it will hopefully give me some bandwidth to chip away at my e36 build. It was a fantastic car and was with me during a great stretch of my life. Bon voyage! |

Congrats on finally finding the right buyer!
The market for 128s is definitely weird right now. When I bought mine, I was just perusing through the for sale section of this site, and came across a WTB thread where a guy was looking for a low mileage 128i stripper with just MT and M Sport/Sport. The individual I ended up buying from had posted a response with what I assumed was an incredibly desirable combo: MT, M Sport, slick top, no idrive, manual seats, and super low mileage. And not a single person had responded, not even the OP. I sent a message to the guy almost 2 months after he had posted, thinking that there was no way the car was still for sale, only to find out it was! I do think the market for 128s will get stronger in the future. Right now the car is still so relatively new that it continues to get lost under the more powerful 135. But eventually you will find people realizing that the 128i was the last car BMW made under its original formula: Simple, fun to drive yet still practical, naturally aspirated, RWD, 2+2 coupe. Edit: Wanted to add that I am super jealous of your wagon! I would love to have one in that exact spec. Last edited by kaputt; 04-01-2018 at 01:16 PM.. |

kaputt it's absolutely a strange market, I've seen several pretty beat ones go quickly for top dollar and nice ones sit on the market for months on end.
It was a tough one to let go of and I hope I own one (no pun intended!) again someday. And I'm in total agreement with you regarding the BMW recipe. It's really the last of the classic formula BMW perfected in the 80s: RWD + N/A 6 cylinder + third pedal + ~3,000 lbs and relatively small. My e92 did not have the same feel as e46s, e36, or e30s of days past. The wagon is fantastic so far and honestly it's the only vehicle that made me move on from the 1er. The two cars are very similar to drive as you'd expect with so many parts in common. The 1er feels lighter on its feet and feels more nimble with a better steering rack. My e91 is quicker with 3IM + software but you can still feel the extra few hundred pounds. All in, with similar mods an e91 will offer 90% of the enjoyment while being 200% more practical compared to an e82. They're both low production vehicles but at the end of the day a Dad car made more sense. I'll be following your build thread with anticipation! I still find myself on 1addicts more than e90post For those interested I started a build thread for the e91 here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1453866 |

Tell that guy with the white E91 in your thread that it looks identical to ours. 9 years and the is still pretty strong.

The e9x chassis is def a lot better stock, it doesn't seem to suffer from the floaty rear subframe. Even with non-runflats and an M3 front bar on the e91, I still feel like the rack on the e82 is better. And white was my first choice but beggars can't be choosers at this point |

Can't comment on steering, though, as the E91 has got EPS and the E82 Active Steering.
