what else would make me want to buy a 1M over an e9x m3?

Um, how about longer warranty? No fear that it was molested beyond belief?
No offense, but imo comparing used to new is ******** at best, why don't you go ahead and buy a used Cayman S or a variety of 911 variants then while you're at it?

I feel like I'm on crazy pills. The 1M is 7 grand over a 135i. There is WAY more than 7 grand worth of improvements. 43-45 grand? Who the hell would buy a 135i if slapping on a MSport package made your car the same price as a 1M? 47 also makes it very similar to a 335is, which cannot touch a 1M in handling. A new M3 would run you ~9 grand more, and that buys you a better engine. You can argue you get more car (larger car) but that also means more weight.

9 grand in your 1M would bring it closer to a M3 then 7 grand in your 135i would to a 1M.

So I personally think the 1M is priced well.

1 series makes no sense, butt ugly, expensive, less practical then a 3 series,

e9x M used is a way better deal, better looking, V8, high revving, much more for your money.

LOL @ 40k for base 135i, who would buy that over a 335i.

What happened to entry level BMW.

I'm excited about the car, it will be my 4th BMW (2000 323ci, 2004 x3 2.5 manual, 1991 318i) and first M car, I think I fit that "target audience" they referenced pretty well, and I am as excited about it as BMW might have speculated...

I am hesitant about buying it without driving it first, but I have a good feeling about it. Hopefully the reviews were honest and unbiased, which is seems they were.

Hoping mine spends at least one weekend on the track every month. Then the rest of the month I'm looking forward to that torque, suspension, and hopefully better fuel economy than my X3, although I never really give my little SAV a chance to post good economy numbers since I drive it hard all the time.

So the car is $2,000 more than expected/hoped. After waiting this long, I think that's not that terrible. Especially if I can get iPod integration without the idrive. Give me a stripped down version with less things that can break/get dated over the next 20+years that I'll own it!

I'll take mine in Black. Can't wait!

Love the lingerie reference... great analogy... thanks for that!

I can't wait to see the Canadian price. An hour from the border, Canadian dollar worth more than the American dollar, and yet I fully expect the 1M to cost 15-20% more here.

Why? Because BMW knows these cars are going to fly off showroom floors regardless. They'd be dumb not to charge whatever they can get for them.

$2700 increase on the 2012 135i sounds like a lot. However, the power seats have been moved out of the premium package and into standard equipment as they are on the 335i. I wonder if the 2012 no longer has "free" leather; it sounds that way. Tthe premium package might go up by $700 and the 2012 winds up being $3400 more expensive than the 2011. I wonder if the ever tightening EPA fuel economy rules are behind this with pricing being used to limit 1 series sales in the US. Better run out and get one now!

Hmmmmm what to do: Cayman R or 1M?

When can BMW just make a track only version of their cars, that is REASONABLY priced? A 1M with full sport buckets, limited interior parts, no A/C, no radio/iDrive, then we are talking fun. Shoot take the door handles away, anything to save weight!

Conveince - $3100; 135 ZCP, $1000, plus $2100 for iDrive

Sat radio - $350

Heater Seats - $500

Harmon Kardon - $875

Smartphone integration - $150

Total cost for both packages - $5450...

plus all options, $7325 on top of MSRP for a fully loaded car. i.e. $54,335

Or you do the math, as your car will suit you.
Convenience PKG for M3 with ipod is $2900 or $2650 invoice, so I doubt it will be more. As far as the Premium pkg, I can't see it being more than $1500 seeing as they are saying ipod, Power seats and Lumbar are standard across the line.

SQ86, my 2011 135i had iPod in it for free, along with leather. That is the 2011 value package. It is going to be a bit confusing until the entire price list is out. Anyway, I don't see how making power seats standard is worth $2700. The 2011 335 premium package is $2650 or $700 more than the 135i premium package, but it includes leather power seats and lumbar support. Since the 2012 135i gets power seats and lumbar standard, and there is no mention of standard leather along with the iPod adapter, the 2012 premium package will probably be around $2650, or slightly less because the lumbar support is already included. That puts my guess on the 2012 pricing for the 135i at $3200 to $3400 higher than 2011. That is a chunk.

thank you. glad i read the rest of the thread (since returning from lunch) before replying. you summed up my thoughts quite nicely.

honestly, i think the debate can be generalized to:

the people who are frustrated/disappointed are the people who are going to have to make a sacrifice (small or large) financially to get into this car. they are judging the car on price. the others are those that can afford this car, a new m3, or mostly whatever they want and are judging the car for what it is. naturally this dichotomy exists for all cars at all price points. this is not a judgment on those that might not be able to afford the car but rather an observation. in the end, this car will be cheaper used than a e9x M3 is used so everyone should be happy even if it takes a couple more years to elapse.

Would pick up CPO m3 coupe instead, and get a real M motor. The M coupe will likely be atleast $55k with all the necessary creature comfort options.. which is pretty ridiculous, even if it holds its resale for being a limited model.

Still not sold on the looks... especially when the 3-series/m3 is so damn gorgeous.

You nailed it. I drove my e46 M3 from 2001 - 2008. When it was time for a new car, the 135 appealed to me more than the e92 M3. Had the 1M been available then, I would've been ecstatic. As it was (and is), I've been thrilled with my 1er and now it's about to get a hell of a lot better!

Everybody bitches that the rest of the world gets 'Limited' models that are stripped down, no radio, AC optional etc....heck didn't the E30 M3 have optional power windows in most of the world????!!!!! So when they finally bring us a 'Limited' model, put more standard options than anywhere in the world, give us a lower standard price than anywhere in the world, people say "awww, it's gonna cost me this much money $$ for Necessary creature comforts".....
THIS CAR IS NOT A CAR FOR CREATURE COMFORTS!!!! BE HAPPY THEY ARE OFFERING THE US THE CAR--PLUS THE COMFORTS (for people that must have them)..Ok I'm done

You guys in the US have to stop thinking you're the only country in the world.
Most countries in the world charge taxes, and often based on HP or cylinder size. BMW does not only sell in the US, but worldwide.

For an M3, I would pay about 1.200$ extra per year, in road taxes, compared to 1M.

From a gas mileage point of view, doing 20K miles per year, an M3 would cost me another 1.300 $ a year. (one fill-up here costs 90$)

So over 5 years, a 1M would save me 12.500$ over an M3, just in operating costs.

While 47k is a little higher than I expected.. is $2,000 really a deal breaker? If you thought it was worth it at 45k I can't see how it isn't worth it all of a sudden now...
