Purchased a Y cable off ebay...doesn't charge

Does the oem Y cable charge the iphone?

When I connect the cable I purchased off ebay, I get a message on my phone that this device is not optimized for the iphone (and my phone doesn't charge). However, I see "ipod" on the headunit and am able to play music off of it.

If I just connect the ipone's charger (that comes with the iphone) to the usb only, it charges.

I think you have an early version of the 'Y" cable. I dont have the numbers, but there was a change.
