Water Pump

Hey guys, just wondering if my water pump should be pumping right from start up? Like, should there be a visible stream from the bleed hose at all times? I have a new motor in, but I don't think the water pump is doing anything.
Cheers.

I don't know but will guess that the answer is the pump should not be running right after startup with the engine relatively cold. I used an application called torque to create virtual gauges of OBDII data for awhile (on a tablet). I was surprised to learn that the highest coolant temperatures were at a steady cruise. Getting on it at that point caused the coolant temperature to fall. I am pretty sure that BMWs are programmed to use the coolant pump to augment the thermostat to regulate the engine temperature and to get it high ASAP (to improve gas mileage). With that logic, the coolant pump would run minimally if at all when the engine is cold.

One of the benefits of the n52 with the electric water pump is that it's able to have the pump shut down as the car is warming up. However the car does go through a bit of a test upon start up to verify pump operation which is how people know their pump is bad if upon cold start their radiator fan starts blowing super loud. Check if you have any pump codes stored.

If you installed a new motor you defiantly want to perform the self bleeding procedure. Get all of the air out of the system. There is a built in program that runs the water pump at various speeds for 10-15 minutes. You can initialize this procedure with INPA or some crazy sequence with the heater switch, fan and throttle.

The way i initialize it is by putting the aircon to 84 degrees, 1 bar of ac speed, ignition on and foot on the gas for 10 seconds

I be prefer using INPA as it provides feedback on the status , pump speeds time remaining etc.

BTW, they recommend a battery charger

I also don't think a working water pump is ever shut off for any reason. When cold, the pump will run slowly and the thermostat will be closed forcing the coolant to circulate around the block. You need circulation or you will get hot spots in the head.
