Recommended batteries

Hi all,

Seeking recommendations for a good AGM battery available in Australia.
What model are you using and how much was it?
I'm aware that coding is required.

Thanks
Justin

Seeing that the original Varta on my car lasted 8+ years, I bought one from BMW. Exactly correct fit and cost $299 a year ago. Fitted it myself and had an indy code it.

I recently replaced my OEM varta agm with a larger capacity (90ah) exide AGM. Was roughly $320. Exides are made in the Philippines, varta and Bosch are German made I believe, but were less than half the price of the similar capacity German produced batteries. Similar warranty.

Can you tell me what model Exide battery you're using and where you got it? OEM size and fitment I gather?

For everyone else - What model Varta are you running and where did you source?

VARTA G14 595901085
All the ones I have seen online are around the $500plus this battery is huge
Battery World was close to me.
I can't see how you can get this battery for $300.

Its an Exide Evolution AGM.

http://www.exidebatteries.com.au/bat...ion/SSAGM-95EU

Its the biggest aH from Exide that will fit in a 135i, very simple to fit (just remember negative first off last on), just make sure it gets coded if its a different aH rating (80-89,90-99 etc), and if its not a diff ah then it still needs to be registered. Had an 80aH Varta BMW one in it before.

I got it from Independant Battery in Melbourne, i realised i made a typo before and have now corrected it, but im pretty sure it was low $300s.

I have a Supercharge battery in mine, same specs as to what the standard battery was and it was ~$180 plus coding by BMW. I do less than 5000km a year and its been in there for 4 years now with no issues.

Just make sure you fit the correct type of battery.
AGM (black casing BMW) for AGM
or for enhanced FLA (white casing BMW) you can install either enhanced FLA or AGM. As Superdaws stated, any change in capacity or battery type will require coding.

BMW batteries have a longer warranty. 3yrs if factory fitted, ie same duration as the car warranty. 2 years if fitted by a dealer.

Not many battery manufacturers will give a long warranty for AGMs as they assume most will be used in stop/start equipped vehicles.

Currently, for genuine batteries the 90Ah AGM is best bang for buck if you dont mind carrying the extra weight. This is because the 90Ah is the most commonly installed size.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. It sounds like the Exide Evolution ($350ish) may be the best value AGM battery unless anyone has another recommendation.

I got my varta from battery world for about $300 but it was the next size down from what you are looking for, my 135 only came with the 70ah and it also lasted 10yrs.

Was it a Varta AGM though? For that price I'd guess it was not, else good deal.

The one supplied by Westside BMW was Exide. I queried them about the original being Varta. They said the Exide with the BMW part # was the genuine spare part here in Australia.

Anyway it was identical to the Varta and seems to be fine. At $299, I'm not complaining.

I've read that it has this capability if you have the Pro version and the battery option unlocked. Anyone in Brisbane able to assist with coding?

UPDATE:

For the DIY people,

Just bought a Varta G14 at Battery world to replace my dying battery. Cost $540, bought the Carly Battery extension for $16. Swapped and registered the Battery myself, no problems seen whatsoever.

re:G14

Hi Glendo,

re: your fitting of the G14, you registered the battery but did you have to recode the ECU? I am told this is also necessary if you change the battery spec and I am looking for a tool or software and cable to do this. Wondering if you have any advice?

many thanks,

Stuart
