Talking N55 Pure Stage 1 Upgrade! Everything Needed and a DIY

It's official! Placed some orders just a few moments ago, I'm going to outline the process from start to finish for going to a healthy and reliable Pure Stage 1 setup on an N55 car, specifically a late model that needs a DME unlock since many people haven't documented this.

Goal: A healthy and reliable 400+ whp car with multiple maps available, primarily one for 93 octane and one for an e85 mix. I want the car to remain as bulletproof as possible so certain things outlined below are not 100% required, but certainly can't hurt. Eventually I might end up going to the PS2, and with these mods I'll be ready for it.

Supporting Mods:

Turbo Mods:
All of the above supporting mods have either already been installed or are on their way. In this DIY I will include instructions for the 7" Intercooler, Stage 2 LPFP, the Turbo itself, and the DV+ installation.

I'll be completing the DIY's as parts arrive over the next couple of weeks, and then documenting the tuning process after everything is installed.

Parts have started to arrive!!

I've been toying with just doing a Pure stage 1 turbo along with a intercooler and charge pipe. Then get it tuned properly and be done with it. I look forward to seeing what happens with your setup.

BTW, BMW and bulletproof gave me a giggle

Had to justify the new look somehow

Hahaha I realize there's no such thing as bulletproof when it comes to this stuff, but I'm doing my best to make it reliable. I've been seeing some lean-outs in my logs on Map 5 lately so I figure why not redo everything the right way. A replacement fuel pump is $400 anyway, so going to stage 2, replacing the tired turbo and leaky diverter valve, and getting everything tuned to perfection makes a lot of sense in more ways than one to me!

Very interested in your dyno graph after the updates. I swore I'd never tap into this, but after seeing how sad the stock turbo is, this project has me very curious.

I'm always surprised how often stage 1 gets bad mouthed in deference to stage 2. Stage 1 seems like exactly what the majority people would want. 900$ for 50whp and the ability to make power to redline, which is the worst part about these cars (lack of high end power).

I'll be going stage 1 whenever we get more e85 stations in Los Angeles. I have no interest in trying to make 500whp. To me, a small, nimble, 400whp reliable car that pulls to redline and still has a nice interior is pretty close to the perfect car.

Working out a shop to do before and after right now, so hopefully I'll have some good data for you all!

100% agree, everywhere I post about this people always say, "why not stage 2?". Stage 1 makes perfect sense for my purposes, and if they change down the road I could easily swap my Stage 1 with someone and upgrade with a very small hit in cost. I see the used Stage 1 turbos sell around $600-700 used which is great.

I don't think that'll last too long, it rarely does.

You eventually caved to subframe bushing inserts (which I hear you're looking to upgrade again already)...

I am very conservative when it comes to modding my car. Yes, I may get new bushings, but that's probably as far as I'll go.

I appreciate that. Your car is extremely tasteful and you can just enjoy your car (which is what it's all about) without worrying about whether you torqued that control arm bolt correctly

UPDATE: Thanks to chris_flies generosity I was able to drop off my car at my friend's shop and take up Chris' passenger seat for a ride home. The unfortunate thing is I won't be able to get all the pictures I wanted but I'll still document the install as best as possible, and will document everything else including tuning/dyno results etc.

Was hoping to do a dyno run prior for direct comparison, but it's $150 and I can't justify that just for info's sake.

Turbo, DV+, and an oil change being done this weekend! Sunday I'm picking up the VRSF 7" intercooler from another friend and getting that installed.

Justin from Twisted Tuning is already working on a base map for me and I'll be sending my DME to him Monday, with a next day return label in the box. Monday I'll also install the Stage 2 LPFP and hopefully get the DME back by Wednesday. Load the base map and do some logs, and then pray Justin can get Rev2 of my custom map by Friday!

All with the goal of making it to Chris' local meet & cruise with a fully tuned PS1 installed
