1 Series Fender Replacement? Difficulty Level For Novice.
Well its official, not even 1 month into ownership of my newly acquired 1er and here I am taking her into body shops for estimates. The girlfriend is still learning to maneuver her Wrangler out of the garage apparently, and well, here is the result:
It's looking like the entire fender will need to be replaced. Has anyone ever had their fender off? Is this something I can do myself? A reputable body shop quoted me $1,500 for an OEM fender replacement and blending to existing paint. Seems kind of steep, so I am considering sourcing a used fender from a salvaged jet black 1er, and just installing it myself. I already found a few locally in the 2-$300 range. The other option would be paint-less dent repair – I found a “guy” who claims he can do it, but he wants $450. Not very keen on the idea of trying to reform metal, but I guess the benefit would be I don’t have to pull the fender. Open to suggestions. Thanks guys! P.S. Ignore those heinous water spots, haven’t gotten around to polishing this thing yet. Last edited by Jordan's World; 11-27-2019 at 01:43 AM.. |

Just PDR it yourself. It'll be cheaper and easier than replacing the fender yourself.
That damage doesn't look too bad. |

Repair would involve getting it as close to straight as possible then skimming it with filler before repainting, I cannot see a PDR guy getting that damage looking anywhere near "fixed" given where it is without skimming and painting. I'd be inclined to go with your original idea of finding a replacement fender in good condition and swapping it out. I did this before on my old metallic black Golf IV, paint match wasn't an issue. I can't seem to find a video of an E82 fender replacement, but here's an E90 Looks pretty easy, if a little fiddly. Last edited by Sam_M; 11-27-2019 at 08:26 AM.. |

PDR is the way to go. That fender is not even close to destroyed.

Just PDR it. That is easily doable without needing replacement or extensive bodywork.

PDR it. Check out a few people that do it. Even if it is 95% it will be better than replacing it. There is no guarantee the paint from a junkyard fender will be a perfect match

If you go with a PDR guy, check reviews first. Not everyone is a happy camper after paintless repair. I had a couple dings on my hood done, and they are nearly invisible. If you look at it just right, and know where to look, and if the car is perfectly clen, you can just barely see where the dents were. I am perfectly happy with my results, but you damage is much worse than mine was.

You can't really do PDR in this location because there's nothing to pry against behind the fender. And thats beyond just a dent. It looks more like a gouge because it scraped the paint off. I'd say upgrade to the 1M style body and keep the girlfriends jeep out of the garage lol. Both of those are probably impractical so don't listen to me. Get a quote from a body shop then compare it to your deductible.

I appreciate the advise everyone, but in fear of dishing out $450 for a PDR and not being happy with the result, I decided to go ahead and buy a used jet black fender sourced from a local scrap yard and attempt to install it myself.
Thanks again guys, Jordan |

I disagree. when I look at a used car I look for the VIN sticker. No sticker = questions. I also have a teen that uses my cars so 80% on a 13 year old BMW is OK.

I had a similar situation with my e90. Leaf blower fell off the garage wall and dented the passenger side fender on crease line. Tried PDR but they could only do so much.
Ended up scoring a matching fender on ebay for $120 with shipping included. Took a few hours to install but wasn't hard to swap. Just took my time to make sure I didn't break or twist anything. It's much easier when you have a fender alongside to see where all the mounting positions are. That's what I'd do, watch ebay and wait for one in good shape. |

Did you end up pulling the bumper and headlights? Everything I've read online has said the job is much easier with those removed. |

Removing it is pretty easy, I would take it off, lay it on a piece of foam and then try to pop it out from the other side with right size hardwood and mallet, flip it over and redo as many times as needed, then fix the remaining nicks by a pro or use some body filler. Then do a touch up by either you or a pro. Should be less than 150...then there is this:

Have had some time off of school due to being online now, and couldn't stand to not have closure, so thought I'd update this post and show the results of replacing the entire fender.
It only took me and two friends about 8 hours from start to finish, however there were multiple beer and pizza breaks to account for, and a lot of time spent adjusting. Overall wasn't too bad of a job. Considering the total cost was less than 150 bucks, I'm happy with the result and more importantly, no downtime having to deal with body shops. Will be keeping the damaged (vin matching) fender for resale purposes. Not that the car is worth a whole lot, but figured it would give someone peace of mind when purchasing, thus making the sale easier if someone is skeptical. Also, installed new center caps and smoked LED side markers while I was at it. |

Was just checking out your 135i build thread, beautiful car man. Seeing what you've done makes me feel lazy. I am in the market for some new wheels, a diffuser, and potentially new headlights. After seeing your jet black example with darn near everything I'd like to do to mine completed, I am getting fired up to start ordering parts.

Is the color Jet Black or Black Sapphire Metallic? Mine is the BSM, I like your shade, I guess I better wash mine!
