New Comfort Access Will Unlock and Lock Doors Automatically When It Senses You

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
From the G05 X5 tech info thread.

Here is how the new comfort access works:

Quote:
The Comfort Access system has also been enhanced vs the outgoing generation. When equipped, the vehicle is able to sense the key from a few feet away, and can automatically unlock and lock without having to touch the door handle. Upon approach, once the car recognizes the key, the ambient lighting and light carpet will come on, welcoming and guiding the driver to the door. This is activatable in the iDrive menu.

Another great feature of Comfort Access is known as Smart Access. A spare keycard can be added to a vehicle when its equipped with Comfort Access, which will enable the driver not to carry the keyfob at all. Once paired, the keycard can be held up to NFC reader on the driver's door handle to unlock the car, and placed in the center console to start the engine.
Spare keycard contact point with door handle and placement in center console:

A little confused about the bottom set of diagrams. Isn't that how the old CA worked? That you had to touch the handle to unlock? And what does that arrow pointing to a hole in the console represent? Where to put your fob? If so, why take it out of your pocket?

The botton diagram shows the new key card and where it needs to make contact on the door handle.

Gotcha. I was more intrigued by the FOB proximity lock/unlock diagram. Will be nice to not have to touch the handle to unlock then open the door especially if I have to access the rear seat first. Can't do that now in my M3 as CA is only on the front two doors....so back and forth I go....

So the difference with one option is that you have a slim key card vs a fob?

Not that worried about the unlock on approach feature. But I did complain about the car not locking itself when you walk away. My daily driver, a 2014 Mazda 3, has this and I thought for sure the M3 would as well. Nope. I've walked away from that car and not locked it for nearly a month before training myself to lock it.

Any chance this can be coded or added through an update to the existing CA? I suspect not but a guy can hope.

Because the phone unlock takes a few minutes.

Jaguar do something similar with a wristband (looks like a Fitbit) using NFC (I guess). If you are doing something sporty and can't easily carry keys, the wristband will unlock the car and I presume be used to start the engine.

I added an alarm system from Aritronix for my motorcycles that has a perimeter system like what is being discussed here. The alarm had a separate RFID antenna that senses the alarm key fob and automatically disarms the alarm. When you park the bike and walk away, it automatically arms itself.

I wonder if BMW will augment the system for car jacking. The Airtronix alarm can be set up where if someone jacks me while I'm on my bike at a stop light, the alarm will kill the ignition to the bike after a short period being away from the key fob.

Holy Shit, how innovative and dynamic. The genius engineers at BMW do it again, really the amount of hours that went into this is totally justified......................wait a second......, My BMW 750 E38 from 1997, that's right 1997, had this, I guess if they shelf it long enough they can bring it back and brag about the feature......4 cylinder BMW anyone,HAHAHA.

Well the phone unlock via the app takes a few minutes. Unlock via the NFC feature is pretty much instantaneous.

The M850i has the Digital Key system and it says you can pair a NFC equipped phone with the keycard and use the phone to unlock and start the car.

The criminal fraternity will love this, once they've cracked it
And more to the point, what the f**k is the problem with just pressing a keyfob to open/close your car?

My 2011 Camry with smart key already turns on the dome light when approaching. Grabbing the door handle unlocks, pressing the black button on the outside of the door handle locks.

The criminal community can crack any system anyway so this point is irrelevant.

The whole point is not to have to look for the key which is a great option. On an x6m, I can also open the trunk without pushing the button. The current system works very well and this improvement doesn't seem that much of an improvement. How would it work if I walk away from the car but someone is still in the car? Would it still lock it? Not sure that's convenient.

I would welcome an iphone integration where the locking unlocking is instant and doesn't require an internet connection so I can choose to carry the fob or no.

Another step towards autonomous integration. Great for the new generation of lazy humans, but personally I prefer a more physical (and engaged) interaction.

Hand me the keys please.
