How do you reply when someone asks you what you drive?

For me, it depends.

If it's a regular non-car person, I say "2 series."

If it's a car person, "M235i."

If it's a hardcore BMW enthusiast, "just a 235" lol.

If it's someone that wants to race me, "stock."

Since I typically de-badge my performance cars,my reply has always been "BMW sedan, nothing special"

I'v never really thought about it, but now that I am, it definitely depends on who is asking. If it's a girl I'll say "a BMW", if it's a guy I say "an M2", and if it's a car guy I say "a Lotus" or "an Exige." They're really just different responses for different levels of conversation.

I'm pretty much the same.

Last car was F32 440i, but to most people I'd just say 4 series.

New car (almost here!) is an M340i, or a 3 series as it shall be called.

I normally say M6 because it isn't a terribly common car, from that you can judge if they like cars or not and to go further or not in the discussion

Like others in this thread, I have other non-BMW vehicles. My answer will depend on who I'm talking to. If I don't want to get into a conversation about cars, I'll say that I drive a Hyundai, which is my wife's car. Though I drive it way more than the M3. If I want to convey something more respectable, I will note that I drive a Jeep. If they ask what model, I will typically just say a Grand Cherokee. If it's a car person, I'll add "SRT". I'm careful about mentioning the BMW because right or wrong, people think you're fancy pants if you own even the cheapest, highest mileage used model. I usually reserve the BMW for closer friends or car enthusiasts. And even then, I just say that I drive a BMW. If they ask for more, I will them "M3".

I just unlock my smartphone and play a 2 second voice recording of my exhaust note.

They then know and if they don't, they're simply not worthy...

Yeah, there's a slice of the population around Minnesota where if you say you drive a Ford pickup they think you're a "man of the people" even though it could be an F450 Crew Cab dually that cost $100K. If you tell them you drive a BMW, it could be a clapped-out 20-year-old 3-series worth $1000 and they'd still think you were stuck-up.

"BMW Coupe" is my answer. If they are a car person they'll ask for more specifics.
