I'll bet the boss wouldn't be too upset...
Statements like these being made by BMW front men make me wonder if this car represents the Ultimate Marketing Exercise. See how effective the heavy sell light substance ethos works for the M brand. If it succeeds we are in for more of the same in the future.

Dr. Kay Segler is a marketing/brand manager at Mini. Having a marketing guy running M division won't be my top choice but let us give him 2-3 years and see where he takes the M brand.

I know where he is taking me with the M brand, out for awhile when it comes to anything new.

He is going to turn the next gen into the Ultimate Marketing Exercise as well. Watch the next gen M cars come out in 2013, only to be followed by a new sports option package in 2015 with a temporary boost increase button, then the CSL editions in 2017 with slight boost pressure increases, then the ultimate CSL editions in 2018 with another boost increase. So by my calculations, I will be ready to look into purchasing a new M product in about 8 years... See you guys on the other side!

Meanwhile I'll soon be purchasing another marques's product to sit alongside my E46 M3 for the foreseeable future.

Now that I have seen the E82 1M in all of its glory...I can say I am impressed--I think it looks great. I would love to have one, but the timing didn't work out, so I just got another 135.

I am setting my sights on the next 1M/M2...I really don't get the negativity in some posts in here...I really feel lucky that we have some decent insight into the planning of current (1M) and future ///M cars. I mean, more information is always better.

I also like the idea of a high revving I4 in the next 1M/M2--I don't think the M division will serve up anything less than what we expect to see...

I really hope I get a chance to drive one of the E82 1Ms....

I hope not but like you said in any case there are plenty of options out there for us to choose from.

I agree. He's marketing by trade and the fact sarcasm doesn't transfer over text is basic online marketing 101. Just unprofessional and careless. I don't want to be too hard on the poor guy, who has given us lots of valued info.

What we need is a final special version of the E92 M3 to keep people like me from running off and buying a used GT3 or some other more focused alternative to current M offerings.

Offering a US model with the GTS engine would be ideal. However if they aren't interested in getting crazy sales, they could still get a good amount with a clubsport type model with the GTS suspension, brakes and exhaust with some real weight loss.

I'm surely not the only one beginning to shop around after being let down by the 1M (and previously the E92 M3) and believing there are not going to be any new hardcore M products for another 3 plus years. Time is ticking if BMW wants to keep our business and needs to spill some hints soon or lose out on those who are looking to buy soon.

Obviously there are a large number of us in this situation as evidenced by the the poll in the other thread regarding opinions of the 1M.

Yes, not as good as I had hoped.----------120 votes-----36.25%
No, lives up to my expectations.-----------116 votes-----35.05%
Ask me after its been properly tested.------95 votes------28.70%

Any hints regarding whether something like this is coming from SCOTT26 or others in the know?

I would contend that the time for such info is now. After the long months of waiting for 1M specs, those like myself are not going to have much patience for the M division to announce something more desirable.

Lucid,

Good to see you wandering here a bit.

The M division earned it's vaunted status through merit not marketing. It built its reputation with cars that were light, well balanced, and had high revving, specific NA power plants. The S65 in the M3 is an absolute gem as well as the preceding powerplants in M cars.

"Times they are a changing." BMW owns the M brand and is moving in the direction they believe is most beneficial for the company. BMW enthusiasts are asking whether BMW expanded the M brand for short term profits at the expense of reputation and tradition? Do the short term gains outweigh the long term consequences? How much does a watered down M diminish the brand, tarnish its mystique, and reduce the long term viability of the M brand?

The 1M is a really well put together 135is because of its "is" motor. The motor is the heart of any performance car. The chassis, transmission, and steering are its soul.

Porsche, a master of marketing and building brand cachet, just introduced the Porsche Cayman R. Given its specs, it is a slight to the R moniker and Porsche motorsport tradition.

Stephen King could could release just about anything and it would be a best seller. Most esteemed esteemed brands can, at least in the short term. Long term, its a wrong turn.

Not only an inappropriate remark, but complete, total, absolute bullshit...
This is so rude! I'm happy Scott is providing us with all these information and I hope he will continue. With useless comments like yours, I'm afraid he stops.

You cannot over promise, and under deliver, and that is what buzz is. It is only working for our new boomerang generation, who hasn't been kicked out of the house just yet...

Buzz worked well maybe 5-6-7 years ago, but those days are gone.

The m3 maintains a clear lead over it's rival's and it's siblings. And they would have saved the RandD of a new engine for the M3. This will be a loss of the leadership role of the M3.

I know the next M3 will impress but I'm not paying 72K for a m3 knowing the
1M has the same motor but detuned. i know BMW says it's about "green" issues but thats just an excuse to merge all the dang M-cars together.

Today I took for a ride in my 11' M3 ZCP 6-spd modded to 460hp a car girl who has a 328, she was blown away. getting in the car she says "wow, it sounds so good" a few quick laps and she was delighted and surprised how fast and how well it handled.

The loss of the V8 M3 is akin to the decline of once great civilazation, to see it at it's zenith then see it slipping away ever down.
the loss of the high-revving v6 was the decline.

this is the end - nail in the coffin.... unless they make it high revving like the R34 Skyline GT-R or Supra. (granted the 2JZ-GTE supra is only 7200 but that was conservative for the time).

mmmmm RB26DETT

We already know. He's going to slap BMW & M stickers all over the FWD Mini.
