It's cool to have a car that doesn't depreciate, and I'm sure I'll never own one that doesn't drop 25% after I drive it off the lot; however, for paying a premium on a 1M, I'd want a premium engine. The n54 is prone to gremlins, tuned or not. And the 1M is already factory tuned, albeit by the highest standards. OP, have you given any thought to the M3/M4 or are you set on the real couped up look?
I'd argue the 1M is far more reliable than most other options you've put forward- ie an aftermarket tuned 135i or 997. It certainly is "only" a factory tuned 135i, and it's not perfect. However as both a toy and an ownership proposition it's been great in my case and most of us here, and I suspect it will continue to be great for someone that would buy the car used. Put your money on a new M3/M4 and you'll arguably get a "better" car, assuming it's your cup of tea. However five years from now it's going to be worth just over half what it's worth now, while the 1M is probably going to be worth roughly the same as it's worth now, or at least clearly not half. That's a roughly 30k premium to own the new M3/4, and in the long run it won't be considered as special as having owned a 1M.

You say you wouldn't put much stock in the 1M, that we're giving biased opinions the OP shouldn't listen to. I think we're guilty of liking our cars, but from where I'm sitting re buying advice I'd listen to us.

I've been to Scotland, and I don't remember anything I'd recognize as summer.

997 GT3 is an approved replacement for the 1M.

Does it lend itself to the elite echelon of Ohhs and ahhs you get from owning a car with less than 1000 units in the us? yes. Does it get a special power plant set apart from every n54 135 and 335i? No. That has really been the deal breaker for me with even looking at a 1M.

I'm not knocking the car by any means, it's absolutely gorgeous, rare, has top of the line ///M division suspension and sounds super mean with an Akrapovic remote exhaust. However, 60+k territory I would really consider a used 997 where somebody already gone through the toils of installing the ever depreciating aftermarket components. the 1M is a nice car, but you have to deal with all of the bullshit that comes with the n54. Several of my friends with 1M's are constantly frustrated with the reluctance of the Siemens DME to accept a pro-tune and perform consistently. This computer systems fail safe modes are way beyond true tuning capability and it seems that every time you get into the car you have a different experience. It's frustrating. I just wouldn't want the problems associated with the n54 and peripheral components associated with it (water pump, injectors, turbo seals, fuel pump) when I'm paying a premium for an ///M car. Not to mention the resale value on the car is strictly because of supply and demand in numbers, not in performance.
Absolutely nowt wrong with the N54.
I hear what you saying.Though its nothing to do with BMW if your friend decides to tune there 1M or not...

Thanks, I'm sure a few here would enjoy the stories. Unfortunately I don't think I can share much yet, but I will be able to, and will do so at the appropriate time. For now... Simply epic.

here's a used one for 65k

Hope the link works.
It's at Kuni BMW in Portland. My boss saw it. He actually texted me to make sure it wasn't mine.

I met the previous owner at the Porsche dealership. He had just test driven the new Cayman S and described it as "gutless" compared to the 1M. I guess he found something else. He was the second owner of the car, having found it at retail price on a used car lot in Hillsboro, OR.

Spot on. Look at what Scott26 wrote on Nov 5, 2013:
"I have seen some early preliminary sketches although not respondent of what the car will look like but the creativity behind the visual aspects is underway.
Engineering has already commenced.
But I must repeat there will be an M2 but it is not coming tomorrow.
For now this is the M235i's moment. The gap in both cars between will allow appetites to be wet and new ideas to be conceived and thoroughly evaluated.
The gap will also allow the new M3 and M4 breathing space.
"

Here is what Scott posted today in the 235 is faster than 1M thread.

[QUOTE=Scott26]

"The time frame between M4 Coupe and M2 Coupe will be around two years to on sale date so there is plenty of opportunity and of course time to establish the M4 as the mid-level Coupe. And creating space for the M2.

At BMW time is important in establishing new models or determining the next course of action for further progression.
It is best to take this time and do it right rather than rush it and get it so wrong.

There is a 2er Gran Coupe due which is expected to be shown as a Concept car first but it is effectively a four door 2er but with a slight wheelbase stretch but you still get that rounded dynamic coupe roof.

Anyway it adds for some really exciting compact and sub-compact models coming from BMW.

And then we are possibly looking at an X1 M which will be in many ways closely related to the M2 in key significant areas."

Pro memoria: the final concept, "formal" design and engineering of the 1M took place in only two weeks.

I just put down a hundred dollar deposit for an M2 at my dealership.

My CA said he will have an M235 in a couple weeks and I plan to drive it.
