Help: Navigation update questions

Hi Guys, First post and I'm struggling trying to work out the details for this.

The car is a 2009 E82 with no tick in the nav.
The map is 2008 premium and it is CIC (single DVD slot).
I have a USB in console and glove box.

Whats the latest map I can have on it? Is it 2018?
Does it need a software / Firmware update?

I have managed to backup the Hard Drive and recreate it onto a bigger drive (the idea was to expand the music partition but I can only mount it Read only)

I was thinking this would be the easiest way to obtain the FSC code and then update but not knowing what map to go to.

Any help much appreciated.

I am trying to update my maps.
I get the error
USB device does not contain a later version. Update will start while vehicle in motion. The iDrive will restart
