ROBOCOP Act

I'm with Jackie every step of the way on this one. It's about damn time somebody did something about these telemarketing scumbugs - better known as scambags

The phone companies will fight this tooth and nail and do their very best to convince everyone there's absolutely no way they could "track" the outfit making the calls - really? - if that's the case, how do they know who to bill for the thousands of daily calls they make daily.

As far as Senator Richard Blumenthal is concerned, I don't trust him as far as I can throw him. Anyone that deliberately tries to make people think they are a Vietnam Vet when they are not, is on my list forever. We can discuss it on the other side Richard....

| Press Release
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) today introduced the ROBOCOP (Repeated Objectionable Bothering of Consumers on Phones) Act, a bill that would require phone companies to provide customers with free tools to block robocalls. The National Do Not Call Registry has failed to protect consumers from law-breakers and overseas scammers – resulting in over $350 million lost to phone scams each year. U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

“The public has been subjected to harassing robocalls for years; it’s time Congress took action and passed ROBOCOP,” Rep. Speier said. “This bicameral bill will put an end to the interruptions that have plagued family mealtimes, movie nights, and those big games. More importantly, it will help cut down on the stress and anxiety triggered by constant annoyance. I know, I experienced it firsthand when I was sick with the flu and tormented by ceaseless sales pitches.”

“Households across the country are harangued daily by millions of robocalls – calls that at best are a nuisance, and at worst threaten unsuspecting consumers with financial scams,” Sen. Blumenthal said. “The ROBOCOP Act restores power to consumers by requiring phone companies to provide effective technology that blocks unwanted calls at no cost to the consumer.”

Richard Blumenthal & Vietnam Service: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Quote:
With his tweets, President Trump is referring to a situation that unfolded during the 2010 U.S. Senate elections, when Richard Blumenthal was running against Linda McMahon. In May 2010, The New York Times reported that Blumenthal said in a 2008 speech, “We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam.”

But as the Times reported, Blumenthal did not actually serve in Vietnam as he suggests there; he received five military deferments from 1965 to 1970. The Times also noted that Blumenthal took repeated steps to avoid going to Vietnam.

I thought it was legislation to prohibit the government from turning injured police officers into cyborgs.

female robo voice:
"this call is about your credit card. Don't worry, there's nothing wrong"

How many have received that call? We get it 2-3 times a day on our WORK phone.

No caller-ID, no lift the handset
Caller-ID and I didn't call that company for information first, no lift handset.

ESPECIALLY at work.

Both my work and personal cell get calls in the same (area code) prefix-xxxx but nobody ever leaves a message.

Ah, yes. Good old Rachel from card services - that rob-beech never gives up and calls about 2-3 times per week. Her and that other idiot robo-call where the guy says my medical (something) is ready for shipping - the same recorded voice from numerous different numbers about once per month.

I always feel surrounded by dirty scumbag thinking type people these days!! On tv I have the hear all these politicians lie constantly and the ones who say they are no bs lie the most! Online I read about the inner crazy thought of racists and mentally deranged people with tin hats on. And then on my phone everyday I get at least one call from some idiot trying to scam me from money! I do need a safe space haha. If someone could actually at least solve the annoying phone calls that would be one problem gone away you got to start somewhere

If you read the entire act there is a economic component you may have missed. It revolves around the value of a US dollar the buying power citizens attach to it.

We have a rural exchange for our landline phone. Recently the scammers have begun using local numbers on that exchange, complete with caller ID. There is no way to stop them at the receiving end. It has to be done further up the path.
