How do I make this part looking clean like new again?
Not sure what the part is called, but in the picture its the part right behind the rim, not sure what I should use to clean it off, I was at the dealer the other day dropping my car off to get my lifters replaced (ticking noise ) and 8 hours later they called me saying they dont have the part. Either way I saw a new Z4 there and this part was silver/shiny brand new, how do I get this to look like that again? (Preferrably without taking the wheel off...
and btw, see that brake dust? That was after less than 2 hours of driving after washing DSC_0391 by LizardMan86, on Flickr |

It's rust. The rotors are steel. I took my rotors off and cleaned it all off with steel wool then coated that area with high temp clear paint to prevent oxidation. Looks like new still after 6 months.

Rotors in general are made of raw steel and therefore always have surface rust. Short of painting that area, there is nothing you can do.

Just remove the wheel and wire brush the area. You can use a dremel or electric drill ect, tape off the caliper and surface area of the disc and paint with a hi-temp paint of your choice. No mechanical experience is necessary.

Rusted rotors - paint job
I also had badly rusted rear rotors, so I took off the wheels, sanded the rotor hubs down with a 150 grit sand paper by hand, wiped them clean, taped off the calipers and rotor surfaces with blue 3M painters tape and then used Rustoleum high temp silver spray paint with a couple of coats. Looks decent enough until I have the rotors replaced down the road.

Painting them should work for a while. Another option is going with 2-piece rotors with aluminum hats. That's an expensive option, but if you need to replace the rotors anyway, these are lighter than stock. See: http://www.ecstuning.com/News/BMW_Bi...013/ES2550968/

The link above is for front rotors, but I just realized you are looking for rear rotors. Here is a link to rear rotors with aluminum anodized hats: http://www.racingbrake.com/Two-piece...008-p/2167.htm
