I have had the evaporative (gas cap) code for a couple years. I am pretty sure it is the pump that pulls a vacuum that the car then looks for to decide if the evaporative system is working. The charcoal canister is part of the same system. It's function is to receive an overflow so it doesn't go on the ground. If you try to squeeze in an extra part of a gallon after the pump shuts off, you risk putting gas into the charcoal instead. The canister won't last long if you do that regularly. If you stop when the pump shuts off, you should almost never be putting gas into the cannister.
If you are not trying to squeeze in a little more gas, I do not see why it would be the cannister. This system seems to reside on the passengers side rear of at least my 128i convertible. I pulled the inner fender liner to find the connector for the brake sensor and saw the overflow pipe headed that direction. I have not pulled the under-tray yet to see all the parts. I suspect my pump is in that location. Somewhat long post to say I don't think it's the charcoal cannister as long as you fill the tank only until the pump shuts off, the first time.

I'm not overfilling. I think it is related to the fuel sender unit and/or fuel pump as some have suggested. Will try replacing first. Can I replace the fuel sender unit without replacing the fuel pump?

There will be a code for a fuel tank evaporate leak though in this case. May just need a new o-ring on the sending unit. Takes 10 min to pull the rear seat, then pull the cover off the sending unit. Should be easy to tell if it is leaking there. |

So we started by replacing the o-ring. During the process my mechanic said the sending unit is corroded pretty bad. Part of it broke off during the process. Now my fuel tank won't let me fill it up, the gas pump stops just past 1/2 tank. First time I tried and went to start the car got a long crank. Now I have a code. Hope its just as you say MightyMouseTech and that the code is part of a bad sending unit/fuel pump that now need to be replaced. Will take the car back for further diagnosis and likely pump replacement in the next couple weeks or until I get frustrated going to the gas station twice as often. Just replaced the water pump and thermostat, now this. Costs adding up! How did this get corroded so badly Carly for BMW - detailed Fault-Code Log Found Faults: --Engine / Motor-- *** 2A1A:Tank ventilation system function *** Fault-Set 1 - ( 207960 km) calculated air mass: 70.00 mg/stk corrected setpoint flow tank ventilation: 0.09 kg/h Engine speed: 640.00 rpm engine temperature: 77.25 deg C |

Anecdotally, when I lived in chandler, my E36 devowered 3 fuel level senders in 100k miles. I think the heat and dry weather destroys them. The symptoms OP describes are exactly what heralded the death of my FLS (also under rear seat in E36s).

Original problem solved for me. Replaced the fuel pump and I can fill up the car no problem and never get a smell of gas in the garage anymore. That problem is solved.
New problem has been introduced. When I fill up the tank to the top and try to start the car I get very, very long cranks up to 7 seconds or so with increasing frequency in sound, pitch and intensity until finally the engine turns over. Will create a separate thread for it. |

Well I found it as well. Finally got a chance to pull the back seat and it's the regulator side for me. Will order parts this week and fix it up. The reason the smell does not come inside the cabin, is the seal around the entry hatch is working as it should. So it wasn't the charcoal cannister.

So I just started having this issue last week after a fillup. The garage would fill with gas fumes with no apparent leak. It was strongest on the passenger side rear when I pulled the car out to clear the area. I do not think I overfilled (auto shutoff) but was a station I haven’t used before. After reading some related threads I checked under the seats. Driver side cap removed, no scent of gas, however, when passenger cap is removed smell is definitely apparent and possible signs of residual moisture? No CEL or codes.
Inputs welcome on likely cause... |

That's the HPFP the one in the gas tank is a low pressure pump, It's job is to get the gas to the HPFP. Look through the thread and you should be able to find the P/N you need. Your call, but I replaced both the pump and the sender unit. If one cracks they both can, and believe me you only want to do that job once.

So I called BMW and requested the pump assembly part number associated with my 2013 135i VIN and they gave me 16117373521, but every site I’ve been to consistently says that’s for the 535i. Parts on sites stated to be for the 135i don’t match up with what they gave me. Just want to make sure I’m getting the right part number pump assembly. Anyone else run into this? |

So I figured I would follow up on the outcome. Replacing the fuel pump assembly did the trick, no more fuel smell. Not the worst job in the world to do, but not one I’d care to do again. Hardest part was probably trying to get the ring off.

Glad to hear you're taken care of. It was a frustrating problem for me too but I got through it with the help of my fellow 1Addicts who contributed to this thread. Thanks again guys.

Hi,
New to the forum & my 128i. I am having the same issue described here. Reading though the thread, I am confused about "carbon canister" that should be replaced - are we talking about the cabin filter (under the front hood near the windshield)? Or when I look at realoem.com they also list an Activated Charcoal Filter (16137163596) which is way more expensive. This part also seems to use a cartridge (16137161329)? And these are locating near the fuel tank I think? thanks! |
