Exclamation Long trip coming up, CEL came on with these codes

Hey all, I got a CEL a week ago that I've been disregarding since I assumed it was the typical tuner codes. However I ran a scan and got the following four codes:

2e0f - Valvetronic system: disabled, too frequent (???)
29d0 - Intake air temperature sensor, electrical: Short circuit to B+

2c90 - Blow-off valve, mechanics: Jammed closed (Tuner code, disregard)
3166 - Tank safety valve: malfunction (Tuner code on N55/JB4)

The first two are the new ones, the second two are tuner codes. I've never seen the 2e0f one and that has me a little concerned. Does anyone have any experience with this specific code? I did research and found reference to Vanos issues and symptoms may include jerkiness and occasional rev-hunting, which I have also seen a little. The car rev-hunts a bit on startup but once warm it's totally fine. It's also a little jerky (seriously minor, most wouldn't notice) when under very little power, like driving in a parking garage.

Any input is appreciated - I'm going on a 6+hr drive out to western VA this weekend and want to make sure I'm not going to get stuck out there.

Car is a 2013 N55 with 65k miles and a JB4.

UPDATE - This has been resolved and was due to a few issues combined. Please see this thread for details: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1412623

Seems that the Valvetronic solenoid motor and the eccentric shaft sensors are often to blame for 2E0F code. For the 29D0 code, check your TMAP, MAP sensor and MAF connections. Try an adaptation reset following.

Well that's not what I wanted to hear. Could the 2e0f happen if the Vanos recall wasn't done? That might actually be a possibility on this car as I just found out it's not BMW-NA registered and they have no records of recalls from it's time in Germany (was there till about 35k miles).

Is this the procedure for an adaptation reset in a 6mt N55? All mentions seem to be for DCT/AT and the web links are expired/broken lol...
  1. Keeping your foot off the brake/clutch hit the start/stop button.
  2. Hold the gas pedal down for 25-30 seconds (apparently at around 25 seconds you will hear the transmission reset to factory settings)
  3. Start the car and you are all set.

Bump - paging the man, the myth, the legend Dackelone! I cleared the code and turned off the JB4. Is it ok to run the car with the 2e0f code showing up? or am I risking any damage here? From what I've read it sounds like it will just turn off the system and use the throttle bodies.

I'm also not having any "clicking" in the engine bay as others have described in relation to a valvetronic system issue.

You know its never a good idea to drive with a ECL on. They do call it the "money" light for a reason.

The N55 engine has no throttle valves. Well... it sort of has a small mini one, but that is only used for the first few minutes during cold start. The idle and rpm is controlled via camshaft timing(vanos) as far as I understand it.

Q). Did you ever have the Vanos recall done? The bolts to the vanos can shear off and drop down into the oil pan or worse jam up in your timing chain and cause further damage. Have a dealer run your VIN to see IF your car has any open recalls.

Since your car was a military sales car... and not in BMW USA's system... just call BMWNA and have them enter your VIN into the US system. Recalls have no time limit. Any dealer should be able to get this taken care of. I have also attached the paperwork that needs to be sent into BMWNA to register your car's VIN.

Hey Dack - this was super helpful thank you! I filled this out and sent it in and got a message saying it could take up to 10 business days. Is there any way to see when they've finished? It's been 10 days and no word I'm super curious to see what's been done on my car lol

Altho you have not heard back from BMWNA, your car may now be registered. A visit to a BMW dealer will be useful; they should be able to print out a Warranty Vehicle Inquiry for you which should provide useful information. As Dack has said, I wouldn't drive too far with CEL on.

Glad I could help.

I would just drop by a dealer and have them run your VIN now. IF nothing comes up... wait another week and then try again.

Gave them a call, no dice yet but today is exactly the 10th day so they said it will either be done later today or by Monday.

First one, I don't see on N55. I see it most commonly on N52k where oil from the engine gets in to the eccentric shaft sensor since 90% of it is under the valve cover. Oil makes it way through the sensor and pushes through the pins and in to the harness.
Never seen this on N55 yet. How's the connector? Should be real easy to look at. Remove the acoustic cover in front. Should be the only round looking connector under it.
As for the other one, I would assume the sensor isn't plugged in.
Neither of which will stop your engine from running. It should lock the eccentric shaft so you'll lose power but it will run. Other one will do no harm. It can gather info from the ambient temperature sensor, air mass sensor and charge air temp sensor on the intake. I assume the one in question is the one on the charge air pipe near the throttle body.
If you need a VIN ran, PM me. I can look it up tomorrow for you.

That'd be a massive help, VIN is WBAUC9C55DVM13476*

I'll try and decipher your message and check on these things myself, but it's a bit over my head lol

It turns out they're taking their sweet time processing that paperwork Dackelone gave me. I sent it in on the 26th and they still haven't gotten it completed

Have you tried calling BMW NA or just your local dealer? I'm pretty sure I spoke to my local dealer back when I purchased my car (even though I didn't buy it from them)... I gave them my VIN and they told me the recall's which affected it, which was only the Takata Airbag.

My car was a military transfer from Germany so there's no record of it in north america. I had to fill out that form Dack sent and they gave me 10 biz days to complete, it's been way more than that

Once the paperwork is processed, would it show up on BMW's recall site?

Maybe, maybe not. ?

I think the OP has to either get someone with some "juice" from BMWNA to help him out or maybe write BMWNA a good old fashioned letter and send it register mail to BMWNA.

I hope Matticus91 will have a positive outcome soon.
