Well, I figured that the 9500ci was more than just a remote display, but I did not realize it was so much more. That does not sound too bad then as if you do not have the thing sitting there for all to see it might keep officer freindly from throwing all the books at you if he does pull you over.

My Valentine One Installation
My son installed my V1 the same way he did the install on his X5. Up on the passenger side of the rear view. It looks pretty stealthy.

So, to throw some new information into the mix...Escort has just announced a new detector - the 9500ix. It essentially has the electronics of the 9500ci in a windshield mounted (and much less expensive) platform. With the GPS-based features of the 9500i it adds an "auto-learn" function where it can automatically learn and mute false alerts, and it comes pre-loaded with a database of speed/redlight cameras and speed traps, all of which can be updated from your home computer and a USB cable as new locations become available.
For those who already own the 9500i Escort will have a program allowing you to send in your detector and they will update hardware and add the above databases, and return your detector to you with your personal locations intact. Rumored prices for the upgrade are $90-130, but have not been officially set; they should be available in August.

Reading the NY law you have posted, I think that using any one of the high-mounting techniques discussed, including suction cups, would be perfectly legal. The key interpretation here is locating it in such a manner as NOT to obstruct or interfere with the view of the operator through the windshield. Such a high mount would NOT prevent you from having a clear and full view of the road and condition of traffic. Hanging some dry cleaning in the back might!
The high mount is also convenient in that the RD is very difficult to see when you walk up along the side or in front of the vehicle as an officer (or thief) might. In this location I feel safe leaving it up in place even when parked. It is believed that this location provides superior radar detection (but decreased laser detection). If you want to use the remote display, it is usually mounted somewhere on the dashboard, or in the ashtray, as Texas has done here (kudos for stealth), and would allow you to drive at night without vehicles behind you seeing the lights of the RD.

When my RSX was broken into, thefts took aftermarket stereo and ECU leaving the car unoperatable, but they left alone V1 radar detector worth $400.

Do any of you guys have opinions on the Bel installed hidden away detectors?
I believe one is the Sti mentioned in the graphs and they do another one the XR-80. I am thinking of getting one installed in my 135. I currently have a V1 but here in NZ it's not safe to leave anything in your car, I've had 3 detectors stolen from smash and grabs, so I was thinking an installed one would be the way to go. They are a bit more expensive but it seems so convenient. |

I bought a cheapo Beltronics Vector 940 ($160) not 5 days ago and it's already (possibly) saved my ass twice. The range is hit and miss, I've had it not detect until about a quarter mile, but then again I've had it detect over a mile ahead. I do get false positives every time I drive by a grocery store (or any other building with motion-sensing opening doors) that are rather close to the road, and I get a full strength X-Band alert every time I drive past a certain gas station, which is weird, but for a bargain-priced detector, don't waste money on Cobra brand, it's crap. Beltronics works just fine, though the fancy arrows on the V1 could be useful.

I've owned a V1, 8500, and now a 9500i. Your statement is simply not true. The arrows are the only thing the V1 has over the Passpost, and the with the 9500i the GPS functions and the ability to lock out frequent false alarms make it a much more friendly detector. Detection range is a toss up between the two. Both do a great job. The features are the only thing worth arguing about, and they're a matter of preference. |

The Passports are upgradeable, and store the false alarms by GPS location so you only have to deal with them once. Have you used the 9500? I'm doubting it, because no one I know who has would ever go back to a V1. |

This has been verified in independent testing here. The increase in sensitivity is worth the power cord. If you don't like it flopping on your dash, hardwiring it out of the way is easy.

I have had a V1 foa few years and it has saved me some money i am sure. I also have a Lidatek laser jammer installed in my 05 325i that i know has saved my butt a few times. I always take my V1 when travelling also.
