But there is no such thing as a sure guarantee. It depends on how the radar is being used. Some cops are pretty skilled, and only switch on for short periods of time, or when they have a specific target. If the radar is on, you will get plenty of notice, but if not, the detector has nothing to detect. And as far as laser, honestly I believe all the laser detector tells you is either you or the guy next to you just got a ticket. |

V1, paid for itself several times over. I've had it for over 7 years. Still works great too.

I have an 8500x50. However it is not installed at the current time because I cannot find a shop that has hardwired a 135 before. They are charging me more because they have to "take a look and see" before knowing where and how to install it. Awesome 135 Guinea Pig.

K40 with laser defuser. Three years no tickets (knock on wood). Saved me numerous times. They also pay for you first years tickets. However, not valid for tickets written in school or construction zones, or incurred with a DUI violation. I enjoy seeing the mean- mugs on Cops faces when they don't get a speed reading and chalk it up to a glitch. The unit is pricey, but it really has paid for itself.

I got a V1 and still got 7 tickects in 2 years. I sold it and drive smartly (like never be the first car travel or alone in the fast lane) instead and since then I only got 2 tickets in 5 years.
The cop is not going to turn on his radar/laser gun all the time. If he aimed at your car, nothing can help you. They always aimed car in the fast lane and they can only tagged 1 car, so if you are traveling behind a car, you are safe unless police cars/bikes line up and plan to hand out multiple tickects in one event and this is the only case a radar detector may help you but usually it is too late.

I have used a 9500ix since they were introduced. It has saved me numerous times. Of course being in Fla the roads are flat and warnings have been received from over a mile away. Nothing is perfect, but the gps eliminates most falses so that I pay more attention when it goes off. The red light and speed trap database is also very nice. There was a forum member offering them for cost in the classifieds. I have had the V1, but got extremely tired of it going off all the time.

All the detector is doing is telling you that there is a radar source "nearby"...you are responsible for the rest. Driving too fast (the exact speed depends on where you are in the US) can land you with a reckless driving ticket which can be 1.) expensive 2.) car impounding 3.) can even keep you from getting life insurance

If you are going, say 100 mph, and a cop is 500 feet away. By the time you react to your radar(1 second), to the time you brake(another second), then by the time you slow down from 100, you are going 80, and he is still going to pull you over. It takes more time to stop from 100-70, then from 85-70 Also, cops are really tricky. Some cops stand behind objects/trees that make it difficult for your radar to detect vs if you are on a lonely road and you can detect them 1/2 a mile away. I am really bad at explaining, but you need to remember, every second counts. Also, you might think it could be a false alarm, and continue to drive, then your full signal turns on, and you really need to brake.

I had both the V1 and the Escort 9500ix. The reality is for detection purposes in the real world they are basically equal. The real difference is the interface. The arrows are great, no question about it, however, for a daily driver, the GPS is a must have IMO. You set the know frequencies and locations for false alerts(newer model may do it automatically now...not sure) and forget. IMO opinion on local driving there is nothing more annoying than constant beeping...the GPS is awesome for preventing that. However on unfamiliar roads the arrows are great. I really wish there was a GPS and arrow detector (damn patents )
On long cross country drives and/or lots of interstate driving in different locations you can't go wrong with either and I think I prefer the V1 because of the arrows. In daily commuting and/or local driving on common roads I couldn't go without the ability to lock out false alerts so the Escort is the huge winner. Since 80% of driving is local and/or the same routes on long drives I kept the Escort and returned the V1.

IMO, if you want to go very fast on the highway, the radar detector won't help much. I go the same speed or maybe slightly faster than the traffic and never had a problem. I've also been the only one around and driven by a trap going 74 on a 65, never bothered to slow down and never got pulled over.
Where I have a problem is on the local back roads where in a lot of cases it's perfectly safe to go 40 but it's marked 25. They're giving tickets for 37 and higher. This has nothing to do with public safety, it's just tax collection.

Last time I tried anything myself, I installed some LED lights for my license plates on my '08 Acura TL-S. I broke both plastic housing brackets to the tune of $45 each. Took 20 minutes though (10 to install the lights and then 10 more to replace the brackets when the finally came in because they were special order) If it is that simple, I may try it. Haven't seen a DIY anywhere for our cars. miiipilot

Valentine 1. They are fugly as hell and a bit bigger physically than others but, can't beat them for what they do. Also, can upgrade firmware with any technology advancements so, the unit does not become obsolete. Expenive as hell, but worth the money.
