$$$$$ to $ Window Regulator (bracketry) Replaced

Background: in the middle of Florida's summer, driver's window regulator ate itself (metal cabling vs plastic housing/age and heavy usage). Window motor was fine. See photos for the carnage.

Notice: this isn't a DIY per se on how to fix, but more so encouragement to save the cash.

Buy the part for the $150-$200 and, with patience (especially if you have large hands), a plastic pry tool, channel locks, and some torx bits you should be able to do the trick.

***Take special care when inserting the motor's metal teeth into the plastic regulator.***

FYI, BMW wanted $427 (with MIL discount AND before taxes) for labor. Took me and my clumsy hands 2 hours to do myself.

Nightmare scenario: had I opted for new regulator bracketry, motor and labor, it would've been almost $1K.

The other option is to buy a used door with these parts in it.

I managed to buy a door which included the window mechanism but not the motor for $A460.
If imagine just buying the specific part would be much cheaper.

But yes, DIY will always be cheaper if you know what you're doing and have the tools.

I just replaced the regulator in my driver's side door. This was the first time that I had done this job, so I was very cautious and not so fast. Total time was about two hours.

There is an adjustment at the bottom of the rear window track for the in-out tilt of the glass. I measured the original setting with calipers and adjusted the new track to the same setting before I installed the new regulator. Getting the glass in just the right place is really fiddly work and takes some time to get it perfect.

If I had to do this job again it would take less than an hour.
