Damn Headlight
Got the adaptive headlight warning. Dealer is quoting over $3k to replace and program the module. That seems like highway robbery. I have called around to some other German repair shops and they all send me to the dealer when they hear the word "headlight". Why is it so much when I can buy an OEM headlight for $1k? Any opinions on whether I should go the dealer route or aftermarket? Thanks for any opinions you have.

Why they want to change the headlight? Many times the adaptive headlight warning is only a problem with the Control Module (part# 63117180829). Did you have any moisture inside your headlight?
If I was you I would take my car to an shop to have it scanned... |

Most likely corroded control module caused by not properly closed bulb cover. A 1-series weakspot due to a structurally over-deforming seal design and the unfortunate location of the control module in the lowest point of the headlight body. The headlight body itself does not need to be replaced unless they feel uneasy about sealing off the new module properly. The body has no significant metal parts, thus corrosion is unlikely. You should ask why replacement is required in your case.
DIY replacing of this module involves above entry level coding skills. Make sure you triple check the seals (or turn them over) after every access. Last edited by eeghie; 03-20-2017 at 01:33 PM.. |

Does anyone have a view on headlights made by Valeo? Significant difference in price, but my concern is that I will still have a factory headlight on the other side.

My zhp headlights needed replacing. Dealer wanted $1200 each for The same crap. I ordered a set of that were boxed as Magneti Marelli. The were the exact same headlights as the dealer ones. There just boxed. I had a buddy order them through his shop and they were about $$650 each. I feel good about Magneti Marelli. Good luck |

Which headlight? I have an LCI headlight where I am not using any of the modules. I can ship them over to you and you can swap it out. It is an easy process.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. Dealer is going to fix, but I saved nearly $1,000 on the parts by shopping around to other BMW parts departments. I did buy one OEM part from a non-dealer source, but it is still OEM.
I do think it's messed up that my dealer was going to charge $1,300 for the headlight that I found at another BMW dealership for $900. Last edited by mywhiteone; 03-24-2017 at 01:37 PM.. Reason: misspelled word |

I purchased the main headlight housing (left) from BMW of Bridgewater (saved $400), socket kit from TurnerMotorsport.com (Saved $10), headlight control module from Autohaus (Saved $300), Electronics Box from BMW of Alexandria (saved $200).
I don't think there is any magical about the BMW dealerships that sold me the parts for less. They must have just been managing their inventories. I asked my dealer for the part numbers that I needed and was shocked that I could find the same parts at another BMW dealership for cheaper. The other main part (other than the tool set) is OEM. I struggled with buying the headlight from an OEM store and that would have saved me another $200-$300, but ultimately I wanted to get it straight from BMW. Let me know if this doesn't answer your questions. |
