Xenon to Halogen Headlights conversion
My 2012 BMW 128i (E82) originally had Adaptive Xenon Headlights on the car. However, due to a crash, the previous owner swapped them out for a really crappy aftermarket one.
I need to get new headlights for my car. I'm thinking OEM Halogens or Depo V2. I don't really want to spend $2k on Adaptive Xenon. So my question is, would OEM Halogen or Depo V2 fit my car? Or are the wiring very different than Xenon and won't easily convert from Xenon to Halogen? If it's the later, does anyone have any solution? I don't really care about headlights aesthetics. My high beam doesn't work and I would like to get that fixed for safety. P.S. I coded out $524 and $522, so Adaptive Headlight Warning is gone at least. Thanks! |

Sure, I'm perfectly fine with OEM Halogen. My only concern is my car originally came with Adaptive Xenon. Is it a plug n play conversion (Wiring wise) from Adaptive Xenon to Halogen? OR to convert from Xenon to OEM Halogen, there are a lot of wiring modifications involved?

Xenon to Halogen is plug and play. Just need to remove the options from the VO and default code the NFRM and it'll work.
I just did this on my track car build to save some weight. Rockauto has OE quality (TYC) headlights dirt cheap. I think I paid $250 for both or something like that. Edit: Just looked, the cheap TYCs are for the pre-LCI. I hated the eyebrow anyway so that's what I went with, the LCI versions are made by Valeo and are twice the price. There is no difference in them other than the eyebrow. |

I did the reverse retrofit on my (since sold) E82. I had to add a ground for the xenon and move one pin for the high beam to get it to work with the xenon shudder. I *think* you should be fine in reverse since the ground is unneeded. OEM Euro Halogen headlights look great and are comparable in price from Schmiedmann and other European-based vendors.

Correct, The Xenon cars have more wires than the Halogens need, including those two and LIN bus. Everything the Halogens need to work are already in the correct location on Xenon cars.

I already coded out $524 and $522. So with the TYCs and coding out adaptive: 1. Is your high beam working? 2. Are you getting any malfunction codes on the dashboard (E.g. "Left High-Beam Malfunction")? |

And....the main reason for my message - when you swapped out your lights did you have adaptive and switch them to LED's ? Did you switch out the complete headlamp units ? What was involved, plug and play or was there more to it ? Thanks.

Thread bump!
I have just carried out a xenon to halogen swap. I have removed $522 from the VO but I now have no high beam and front sidelights. I also have error messages for no main beam AND sidelight in INPA and on the dash. I suspect there is a wiring difference as prior to the swap, I had no error messages but still no high beam. However the indicator stalk would make the dipped/low beam lights illuminate when using them to flash the lights. - they should activate the full beam. I have used INPA to make all the lights come on, however INPA will not activate front side lights or main beam which suggests there is an issue at/between FRM module and the lights themselves as I know they work. The car was involved in a crash some point before I owned it and I needed to use tool32 to reset FRM to make the drivers side xenon work again as it was full of water and the ballast had clearly burned out. I have read conflicting messages on whether the wiring is plug and play. If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated! |

I have personally removed my xenons and replaced them with halogens, updated my VO and default coded the NFRM and they work perfectly with no modification to the wiring. The only difference in the wire harness between xenon cars and halogen cars is an additional ground for the xenon cars that doesn't do anything in a halogen car.
I suspect something went wrong with the coding procedure. |

Thank you for your response. When you say default coded the NFRM, what was the procedure for that as this is something I have not done!
I only deleted $522 and used FA write and SG Coderein on the CAS and NFRM modules. |

Yes I checked and it’s not there!
I might try running the procedure again in case I’ve missed a step by mistake and coded the CAS but not the NFRM maybe? I’m a novice with these programs so user error is likely! Thanks for your help! |

Well… I’ve tried again and it’s still not working. I’ve checked the VO on CAS and 522 and 524 are not present.
I’ve followed this guide on YouTube (actual video starts from 04:15) And added in the SG coderien step after the FA write step. I’m thinking that maybe someone else has interfered with something as the vehicle has had a shunt at some point. Also, will plugging in a FRM module from an e87 make the lights work. I have one spare and was wondering if doing this will show the error is actually the FRM as opposed to a hardware issue |

INPA Shows this error
High beam or turning light on the left defective operating hours no signal or value test conditions met error present and already saved This is repeated for the other main beam and both side lights… This makes me lean towards a hardware issue somewhere as I think the FRM is ‘looking’ for the main beam and side lights. These errors were not shown prior to coding |

So I carried out a quick check on the headlight with a spare bit of loom that I had. I grounded the earth pin and put 12V through all of the pins and every light illuminated. This rules out a headlight issue. I then noticed that the cars headlight plug does not have any wire going to pin 6 (main beam)
Any reason why this could be such as variation of looms fitted to E88 cars built 0408? I’m beginning to wonder if someone has been carrying out bodge repairs to this car. It would certainly explain why my research and reality are not lining up! |

Billybob101 - Were you able to fix this? I'm also going from xenon to halogen and as you have noted, everything works except the high beams. Pulling the high beam stick back (flash to pass) works, but pushing the lever forward does nothing. Looking at some wiring diagrams online I was thinking of moving pin 6 to pin 5 but that makes no sense since pin six appears to be for high beams? I don't have a coding tool. I'll try and add a pic of the headlight harness and the car headlight harness. Anyone see any issues with the pin-out? I too was hoping this would be plug and play.

Interested to see who has the most knowledge or can figure out the issue you guys are dealing with.
For me, I did the Xenon to Halogen conversion using the DEPO V2's and everything on the headlights themselves works completely fine. Low Beam, High Beam, Halo's as DRL's, etc. However, I cannot figure out how to get rid of the "Parking Lamp Malfunction" error message for both left and right. -Used Bimmercode to change the VO removing adaptive -Disabled all lamp checks for the headlights I know there has to be one step or specific coding option I am overlooking. Anyway, looking forward to see what conclusion you more experienced guys can share. Thanks. Last edited by JusCrayZ; 11-15-2023 at 09:32 AM.. |
