I had the engine fault code come on several weeks ago. took the car to the dealer and picked it up yesterday and was told it was a knock sensor issue. They replaced the part and it appears to be driving OK. Will try and drive some over the next few days and will report back.

Had same thing happen to me yesterday and today.
I started the car yesterday evening and it took a split second longer to turn over. It then generated an "engine malfunction" alert. I killed the engine and restarted and it was fine. Then I drove home on the highway at 70mph with no issues. Today the car had another rough startup. It idled very low (sub 1000 rpm) and burned very rich. "Engine malfunction" came up again. I killed the engine and restarted. No problems. Then I was accelarating from 35-45 and the alert came on again. The screen says the engine is running at reduced power and the cooling fan runs continuously. Charge pipe looks ok. Last edited by Dee Pee; 06-07-2013 at 05:07 PM.. |

For those whose car's knock sensor has been changed by the dealer: do you happen to know if they put a different/new sensor or just replaced it with the same one that comes from factory? If there is a different sensor, do you guys have a part number to share?

Thanks, this should help everyone who may eventually have this issue. Especially, for people like me who has a single and essentially useless official service around.

Aaaaaand the diagnosis is the HPFP.
Of course it's not in stock and has to be express mailed which means I won't have my car back until Wednesday. Really BMW? REALLY? You have a known problem and don't advise your dealers to stock the friggin HPFP's? I mean the N54 engine ain't exactly rare. |
