Location is very important in how uncommon the 1er seems. When I was searching nationwide for my car, across all of the online auto sites, nearly every car was in NY/NJ, DC, FL, or CA. I knew I was going to have to fly out to get one to not pay a $5K premium for a CarMax 1er. Here in TX I've seen 2 other 1ers on the road in 6 months: 128i coupe and 135i vert. A good friend of mine who was a BMW tech in Houston until 2012 talks about the car like it's a unicorn and wishes he got one new while he was there.

Really a fun combo of being uncommon but not rare. From experience, rare cars are great when running perfectly. But you can't beat parts availability and price for fun cars that aren't rare!

How a Simple Redesign Could Have Made the Pontiac Aztec Less Ugly

Quote:
Is the Pontiac Aztek the ugliest car ever? Sources say yes. But just imagine what could have been, if only Pontiac had hired someone to redesign the car. Imagine no further, friends, because someone has actually gone ahead and done the work for you!

Really? I see them all the time in DFW. There are 2 others that park near my spot at the office, one is the same config as mine but a 135i instead of a 128i. I spotted a different doppleganger at a different parking garage in Dallas not long ago, too. He/she must have gotten a kick out of parking directly next to me. I certainly got a kick out of returning to my car at the end of the day to find two 6-speed space grey sport package 128is parked next to each other!

It is really funny to me to think about this. Even funnier is the thought that all 69 owners might be equally enthusiastic about them and should have an annual meetup. This would be a good sketch on Portlandia, if the Aztec was a Subaru.

To me though, I've never understood the draw of a car being unique/rare. I would prefer if everyone was driving the same car as me in the same configuration and color. Parts would be so cheap.

In MN at least, I've only seen a handful on 1ers around. Usually at Cars n Coffee I'm 1 of 2-3 that'll rollup. At caffeine and octane, there were only 2 including myself.

For what its worth, they sold 120k Aztecs in America --- 2x the amount of 1's!

The 1 is certainly an uncommon car, I hardly see them anywhere even in North Jersey/NYC. Part of that is them becoming old and people driving 2's now of course.

And if we narrow it down to say, 1M's - 6300 made vs 40,000+ e90 M3 coupes.

They are certainly on the rare side of normal cars. Sure if you compare to a Bugatti or one off prototype from the 50's few cars are 'rare'.

That's awesome. I do like seeing other 1ers. I should admit that my nationwide search was limited to n55's with <50k miles.. those are definitely concentrated on the coasts. A couple came up in DFW, one in SA. Down in the greater Houston area I never see any.

Sometimes rare means nothing. I have a 2010 Colorado that is 1 of 1 (due to color and configuration). There are likely 10-20 Colorados within a mile of where each of us sits right now. So while my truck may be "rare" it does nothing to increase the value of my truck because so many Colorado/Canyons were produced.
As to 1 series, I see few 135s, but there are a significant number of 128 convertibles running around here, nearly all driven by women over sixty. Does not change the fun I get from my 135i.

I don't usually like qualifying a car as "rare" if you have a specific color combo with interior/exterior. I'm sure if you break down all of our cars by the number made with the exact options, we all have 1 of 100 cars. Mopar guys love to do this all the time, "ONE OF 22 PLUM CRAZY WITH THE MIDDLE TIER RADIO.."

I would like to see how many 6spd manual sport/M-sport 128is are in existence though. Can't be many. I check Cars.com and a few other sights once a month or so to watch the market, and usually 1-5 cars out of ~30 128i that CLAIM to be manual are (1) actually a manual, and (2) have the sport or M-sport package.

That's what throws me about mine. It has M options and sport options, pretty much everything but the different headliner.

Same with mine. It's a "sport" but DCT so the only things I don't have are the headliner, wheels & doorsills I think.

I guess I should have said unique combo not rare, I agree.

for a large company---it's a rare car. Can't tell how you how many people have come up to me over the years and said "omg i've never even seen one of these in person!"

Even the standard 1-series is not a common car. Barely see any. When i do see one i get pretty excited. a 1M? I live in one of the biggest cities in the US and besides my own i have only seen 2 other 1Ms on the street since it was introduced in 2011; and they may have been the same car since it was white and on the same freeway.
