2nd gear syncro starting to fail

I have a 6speed mt and my 2nd gear syncro is starting to grind. I have looked into getting it fixed and Ive read that BMW only does full units. can anyone confirm this? also is there a good place to get an aftermarket trans or am i stuck surfing ebay or craigslist? I have replaced the trans oil and the problem persists. any suggestions? out of warranty so looking for less expensive routes than $10k

I had the exact same issue as you with the 2nd gear, it made it no enjoyable to drive. BMW only replaces the full units and my bill came out to $9500. Im glad warranty paid for it.

Changing fluids never seemed to help

under 50k, pretty sure the last valet really messed up. started not long after it.

wow that's horrible, sorry to hear that. I'm always cautious when it comes to valet parking my 1'er. I'm hoping this is not the normal case for these tranny's, I thought the 6 speeds trans on these cars were relatively bulletproof with FBO. Just curious, are the N54 trans exactly the same as N55?

It is very common for 2nd gear to go in our trans
