Instead, I'm buying a more expensive car that doesn't compromise. Too much compromise in the 135i for the price. It's fat, the reviews universally say it understeers, the steering is vauge, and frankly, the design is pretty awkward from certain angles. Quote:

I spent just under $41K for a 2007 335i sedan with ZSP, ZPP, and Nav via ED. This thing comparably equipped is going to cost just about the same (135i + ZSP + ZPP + Nav + Sound). US retail will be roughly $43, so an excellent ED will yield about $39. Less than $2K difference for a like-engine model upgrade is wrong. I know I'm comparing a coupe to a sedan (and the price increase for two less doors is another beef), but seriously...
Does anyone know what the BMWCCA rebate will be for a 1? Same as a 3? |

Don't know about the BMW CCA rebate yet - they say all new vehicles are eligible though.
As far as your calculations on an ED cost for a 135i I came up with the same numbers as you a little while ago, cool!! Yup - it's pretty close to an 335i sedan in price but some of us (me included) want a smaller car. One of the attractions of the 1 series for me is the fact that it'll fit inside (just barely) of the outline of a Mazda 3. I personally don't equate size as an indicator of value - otherwise we'd be paying Ferrari prices for a Suburban (well, that may be stretching the point a bit ; -). |

Sorry...but if you were considering a 135 against a GT3 (996 or 997), well...I really don't know where to begin... if you're considering a 70k+ car against a ~30k car, I can't see how 2-3k variation in the 30k car would make much difference when weighing other variables... |

Ok what are competitors of 135i if you are looking for a performance car
I am comparing NEW and STOCK car at MSRP. If you want to compare 10 years old used Porsche please start a different post. 135i's competitor: New EVO MR for 36k fully loaded New STI for 35k (not sure if this is base) New M coupe for 45k out the door.

So many items, so little time to respond.
Size: I think it is interesting that people think that if the pricing is so close to the 3, they will just go with that car. There have been a few to note it here, and I am surprised that there are not more, but I find the new 335 to be such a large car that I immediately determined I would probably never to buy another 3 series, no matter how good they are. I want a smaller car. I loved my E36 and I like my E46, but I think that car is really way too big. I am still disappointed that the 135 is as large as it is. I was hoping for closer to my MINI. Price: I am also a little confused about all of the concern over pricing. A six year newer, 80 HP more, well optioned 135 will be about the same as my similarly optioned 2002 330 Ci. That is pretty good value people. Cross shopping: For those that will be passing on BMW and going with something else for whatever reason I offer this story. About 20 years ago, I was at an autocross and I met a guy driving a E30 325is (eventual 4 time national champion). I was a diehard Honda CRX driver and I asked him about his car as it was surprisingly fast. We talked for a bit and I asked him how much those things cost. When he told me, my jaw dropped and I said "I could by two Hondas for what one of those cost!?!" He replied "but then you would have two Hondas". At first I thought he was being an ass, but that stuck with me. The next year, he let me drive the car and I was more than impressed with the feel and dynamics of that car. A couple of years later, I joined the BMW club and continued to drive his BMW's once in a while. Five years after that I could afford to buy my first BMW. After my experiences, I knew that this was the car and the brand that was made for me. At this point, I really have no interest in anything else. I am sure that there are a lot of really hot, fast cars out there, but someone else can have them. I will buy what I know works for me, because all cars are not created equal. I hope everyone will be as happy in the long term as I have been with whatever they choose.

To make it even more confusing.
Right now you can pick a Z4M coupe in the mid $40s. This is for a car with premium package and NAV. Many dealers are discounting them $10k off MSRP. The Mcoupe without premium and NAV actually can cost less than the 135i with added options. |

What you can get with the nav
Navigation system with iDrive and Real Time Traffic Information - convenient functions at your fingertips. The iDrive controller allows the driver to effortlessly operate the navigation system, climate, communication, and entertainment functions. The system adds an intuitive information menu that helps you personalize your settings for entertainment, display, and vehicle features. The information menu also provides clear feedback on your vehicle service status for your peace of mind. Voice Command allows you to simply speak to tune a radio station, input navigation information, or operate a number of vehicle related functions, while your eyes remain focused on the road ahead and your hands on the steering wheel. Real Time Traffic Information is also included, and does not require a monthly service charge. This service, available in many metropolitan areas, can help guide you toward less congested roads. Vehicles equipped with the optional BMW Assist system display its safety and convenience features like Roadside Assistance, Service Request, while Bluetooth® connectivity makes hands-free calling a snap.

You lucky people!
I have seen many a response from US citizens concerning the pricing of the gorgeous 135i in the US, most folks are either grudgingly accepting or straight pissed off. Well, bear a thought for us poor Aussies. The A$/US$ exchange rate is about A$1.1 to US$1. The latest price guidance I have for a bog standard 135i delivered to Perth, West Australia is A$80,000 or US$72,700...about twice what it will cost you guys. If anyone has any idea how this works perhaps you can tell me.

Hm... If I want the 135i for $41,000 at most, what options to get?
I will definitely be getting the 6-speed auto and sports package, metallic paint, iPod and USB adapter, Comfort access. Can I do away with the Premium Package and the Nav?

a fully loaded 335i coupe comes to about $55k. a fully loaded 135i coupe comes to about $48k. That is a 6 or 7 grand difference in price which seems pretty reasonable to me. |
