Winter tire size for 128i

Hi there, just got my car a 2009 128i, and winter is approaching and would like to get a set of winter tiers. I've done some reading on here, but I'm still not sure what size of tire to look for. Anything between 16-18"? I'll be replacing rims as well.

I bought a tire/wheel setup from Gill at Tire Rack last year; 205/50R17 Michelin X-Ice Xi2 on Sport Edition A7 wheels. This year they are recommending a 205/55-16 Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 on Sport Edition A7 wheels.

16" wheels will fit.

For winter, as you're case is a 128i, go 16". Cheaper wheels and cheaper tires.

Go as narrow as you can (one size narrower / taller than oem would be good).

Just wondering if anyone has driven trough winter with the stock run flat tires that come with the car. Im assuming they are all seasons, so it should be ok?

Or are winter tires a must? (I live in Toronto)

HAH!!!! In Toronto... yea snow tires are a MUST!!!

You can forget A/S even if your car has them. Most of our cars come with summer tires though. Get an extra set of 17"s or 16's for winter duty. I agree, go with 16's - cheaper and more choices in wheels.

I had 3 series.. and tried drive in snow w/ stock RFT tires...
it wont move at all. Oh, it did slide like a sled on a hill tho.

Been going around on this one with the wife for a bit - we're in Portland, OR where the winter highs average about 45. Our other car is a subaru outback so if we head to the mountain it's going to be in that thing during the winter and driving around town only gets bad once or twice - usually just wet roads from the incessant drizzle.

If you were just going to be driving around town in upper 30's or low 40's, would you try it with the stock runflats? Tempted to just get some Pilot Sport A/S Plus for year-round use, sell the runflats (2500 miles on them - would have to be worth something, right?) and come out about even instead of coughing up $1,200 for a set of 17" winters or say $1,000 for 16".

I like driving in the snow - have always had front wheel drive cars, would throw some chains on and pretend it's rally season, but with the new 1er I can't see that happening.

Thoughts?

hi guys,

I've gotten my winter tire choices down to these two (both 17"); Nankang sv1 and Dunlop ds2.

I know there are better options, but these two fit into my budget, the Nanking is cheaper, anyone have any info on these two? Are the Dunlop's worth the extra money?
