People are reluctant to answer for fear of starting another oil quality discussion which can get a bit lively .

If it's LL04 and your manual says to use LL04 (which I assume is the case as you're in the UK) it is good.

I personally would use their 5W-40 provided that it is LL04,

Whatever you choose, make sure the jug has LL04 on it, not just the ad. The companies and BMW change their formulations and/or requirements from time to time.

The castrol edge 5w30 I used says ll04 approved so I think it's all good!

Since you are in the UK you can run Ll-01 or Ll04.

I've always run Castrol 0W40 in my N55 seems to be the most recomended LL04 we get here in the states. There's a forum by a guy named Bob, who is apparently an oil guy. You can find more info than you'd ever want to know there.

I've always used BMW LL04, recently switched to Castrol 0W-40 in an oil change. Theirs a youtube video comparing both, on temps higher than 200c the LL04 left a sludgy hard to take off residue. Not that your car would ever reach that temp level but for peace of mind when switch your car off you know that Castrol 0W-40 won't sludge over.
