I need to power seats outside of the car

Hi all,

for a project, I need to figure out how to power an E82 sport seat so that the controls of forward/back and seat back tilt work (don't care about any other controls). There are so many pins on the connector. Any idea where I apply +12v and ground?

See below why I need this

Thanks!

Mate i checked the wiring diagram for power supply to the seat module, unfortunately the seat is on the CAN bus so just giving it power isn't going to make it work. You're going to need some kind of canbus emulator.
That being said, that's a really cool setup!

Take the seat apart and re wire it. If it's run via CANBUS just use relays routed to the switches on the seat controls to allow higher current directly to the motors. Use a transformer to convert 120v AC to 12-14v DC. Laptop 'bricks' do this already but I'm not sure if the output from one would be enough.

bummer, everything on our cars is more complicated than it needs to be! Thanks for the suggestion, but I am hopeful that someone will by my pair of sports seats, so this is temporary. I would not want to hack the seat apart.

It might still be doable, just easier tapping directly at the motor and switches. If you can map the harness to get the right wires it could still work

Get an arduino and can-bus shield if you're serious. Should take you a couple days of work to figure out what's going on and get it all programmed.

Also, try setting up that flight stick as an E-brake on the pitch axis. And get Assetto Corsa if you haven't already. It's by far the most realistic driving sim available on Steam, and as good as anything out there.

just buy a recaro or other race type seat off craigslist and call it a day, this seems way more complicated than it could ever be worth.

I just got project cars, so might play with that for a while. I had read that the AI in Assetto Corsa was way too hard..

The AI sucks, the physics are much better than pcars. I like driving against other humans so I've only raced the AI a couple times and didn't find it challenging.

power to seats

If You have the same harness that I do,then You should have a red wire (power, hot ,positive +) and a brown wire (ground, negative, earth -) This should power all the electrical motors in the seat. Since the seats draw a lot of amperage .Remember the seats are fused at 30 amps . Connect the red output from Your power supply to the seat. Use an automotive inline fuse You will need a large regulated power supply. This changes Your AC house current to DC. You can get used ones on EBAY. You don't need one for clean power like the ones for sensitive electronics so it should be relatively inexpensive. Depending on the length of the run from power supply to seat You should use minimum 12 gauge wire 10 would be better.

Thank you! I will look at the harness to see if I have those wires. I have a beefy 12V power supply, so I should be set if I can find them.

power supply

Another twist would be to add a battery and trickle charge it.You can find industrial batteries, closed cell that are a couple of years old. These come out of backup power supplies for large mainframes. They usually switch these out every couple years for reliability. BTW, I have tried to move the seats using 6 amp 13.5 VDC and that was not enough. Good luck on a fun project!

No, I never really tried, too lazy lol. I will probably get my butt in gear to sell the two seats I have as a pair and then simply buy a race seat.
