European 1Addicts - planning a late summer tour...
Hey Guys, So I was talking to Rikx1M Trond and Elsabor67 We want to do another ALpine tour in late summer. Probably in September time period. Probably in Northern Italy - since the Italians seem to love our cars. I just want to hear from the "gang" and any newcomers on their thoughts for a nice little road tour. We would probably start off in Southern Bavaria and work our way South. ANY ideas on where to drive and what to see? I think driving during the week is probably better our chances for less traffic on the twisty roads. I would like to drive somewhere new. Maybe ChrisM135i or markymark666 have some ideas on the road selection. I am creating this planning thread here instead of on FB bc I find it easier to go back and reread people's posts. I think mjn77 caustics kemiksiz and joao.toscano might want to join in. ? So throw out your ideas!! Dackel

I have some friends coming over from the states from Sept 24th thru Oct 3rd. Maybe after that would be better for me. But then again it's gonna be touchy with the weather up in the Alps then. Humm... markymark666 Danke for the old memories. Cool! Have you seen this thread of mine... It might help plan your ED... ChrisM135i markymark666 will probably do a small short tour in late July. Not sure about which weekend. Maybe PM Christian(via FB). Chris wants to break in Emma(his new M2) in on some nice roads.
Chris and I wanted to keep our private tour private... but perhaps you can join us along with Mark. Dackel

Obviously i've got that little extra step of getting across the Chanel, so need to book that i'll keep a close eye out for dates. I'm sure you need no help with ideas for the route, but shout if you need anything, as i have folders and folders of roads to be driven

Yeah, I'd love to join. Early October would work best for me - for September dates I'd have to check first.

About ideas:
I can only recommend Switzerland, starting from Graubünden and driving over to Interlaken... Fluela, Albula, Julier Pass... and more to the west the holy grail of swiss passes, the Furka/Grimsel/Sustenpass... it's also possbile to skip the Graubünden area and come from the north via Klausenpass towards Sustenpass... Near Furkapass is the devils bridge, which is interesting... Near Interlaken (after Furka/Grimsel) is also the Eiger and the Jungfrauenjoch, which is a place I realldy need to visit one day... Or we go south from Furka/Grimselpass towards Jungfrauen Gletscher... (but that's more me thinking in combination of road + destination) I'm going to Switzerland Saturday in a week, and I'll be documenting Furka-, Grimsel-, Susten- and Klausenpass passes for my blog. Maybe that will help in the decision making? Of course, Switzerland is always a pricy country, food and hotels can be incredibly expensive... on the other hand it's not too far away, similiar to Austria... From Interlaken it might be possible to head either north to the Vogesen (but that is a trip there itself, 200 km min), to the west towards France and do Route de Grandes Alpes in on of its dozen variations... or south towards Tuscany... which is different from alpine passes but beautiful nevertheless.... (though to be honest, these are all plans I want to drive someday, but haven't yet, so take it with a grain of salt... I can't really recommend those either of those 3 yet due to no experience). Another idea might to be head more to the east of Austria. I have a few Curves!-magazines at home, I will have a look where they went there.

So, I had some time to think and check maps and compare with the curves! magazine...
a central-Switzerland tour could be something like this: 1. Start in Davos (all together about 250 km, without detour)
2. from Thusis towards central Switzerland (Ending after Klausenpass this is about 400 km)
Instead of Sustenpass/Klausenpass, it's possible to turn back after Sustenpass towards Andermaat and have a look at the already mentioned devils bridge. Or Sustenpass back towards Interlaken/Eiger Or Sustenpass/Andermatt and again Furka/Grimselpass and south towadrs Jungfrau/Aletsch Glacier. I'll check also those passes except San Gottardo / Lukmanier in the next two weeks starting from Saturday, so after then I can provide a real experience and pictures. I also don't know how many kms it's fun to drive and when it gets tedious. How many kms did you drive per day on your last tours?

I reckon 200 miles per day is absolute maximum.

Yeah, that's about what I guessed aswell, not too much more than 300 km per day.

What roads did you guys already drive in Austria? The curves! magazine I have here goes straight through Austria, with a small detour through Slovenia and ends in Triest in Italy... maybe that's interesting aswell.
The route starts in the west with the Hahntennjoch and Silvretta-Hochalpen-Straße and then works its way through the east via Timmelsjoch, Jaufenpass, Gerlospass, Großglockner and ends with Nockalmstraße, Turracher Höhe, Wurzenpass, and in Slovenia with Vrsic-Pass and Mangart-Sattel. I haven't driven any of that yet, so can't comment on the quality of the ride. These are the last ideas I can contribute (and they're not even mine, just quoting curves!). I'm open for everything, as long as we have fun.

Nockalmstraße, Turracher Höhe, Wurzenpass, and in Slovenia with Vrsic-Pass and Mangart-Sattel. Some of our gang drove into Slovenia this year. I did not partake in that drive. There were some dirt gravel roads in some sections. But most of those guys loved Slovenia. I really liked driving Hahntennjoch, Timmelsjoch, Jaufenpass, Gerlospass, Großglockner. Although each year Großglockner's toll fee gets higher and higher. (34 euros each way, I think. ?) We also drove thru Kitzbuhel and on the Felber Tauern Pass to get to Großglockner. Felber Tauern Pass is more of a curvy highway than a mountain pass. But it does have it's tight sections. I think Timmelsjoch is my favorite. Quote:
Thanks for the added ideas. How did your drive go this past weekend ? Dackel

The toll for the Grossglockner is €35.50 now, but i think you get another free go inside 12 months with it.

A lot of the passes in Austria have also been resurfaced inside the last couple of years.
