GoPro thread
Thought I'd start a GoPro general thread for us to share tips and tricks. I just purchased my second GoPro. I sold my original HD Hero and bought a Hero 3.
I spent this morning drilling the case to accept the microphone adapter and went for a drive to try out an Olympus ME52W microphone. The included cable was only long enough to clip the mic to the sunroof shade with the camera attached to the windshield. I attached the microphone cover and put a zip tie to hold it firmly in place. With the windows up the sound was good but windows down it sounded like a stock GoPro mic. I've got a 12' extension cable on order, going to try a few different placements. I wanted to attach the mic to the rear bumper, but after hearing the sound with the windows down I'm not very hopeful of good results... I'll do some more testing this weekend and post any good footage I get. I'll also detail any mounting setups that yield good results.

That's my Plan B. Also just realized that I'm only getting Left Channel audio. Lots of testing to do...

There's also a couple spots in the engine bay that work well and get very little wind noise with tons of engine sound obviously.
This is just throwing the camera under the hood, with a mic the sound should be better. |

Nice audio. I was concerned that an open intake would have too much turbo in the audio but that wasn't the case with your video. As soon as I get my 12' extension cable I'll give that a try. Do you have a pic of where you mounted your mic?
I did another test today using just the microphone, USB adapter and the Hero3 without the case. I only get audio out of the left channel only with the ME52W. I tried again with the mic from my gaming headset and was able to get 2 channel audio. I thought the ME52W was a stereo mic but apparently not.

I run a Hero 2, I was going to get this mic soon for autocross season: Audio-Technica ATR-3350
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica...o-Technica+mic It seems to be the go-to mic for go-pros. It is indeed mono but works. I'm afraid to drill my case and I may just suck it up for a new one....once in awhile I do drive in the rain. |

I drilled a 5/16" pilot hole then finished the job with a Dremel. Make sure your bit is sharp and go slowly to avoid cracking the case. The hole isn't that big, it could easily be covered with gaffer tape in light rain. The "frame" is only $10 less than a complete water tight case so I decided to drill.

Nice Thread Gabe...Personally I don't record audio via my gopro as it sucks...I normally record via my Zoom H1 and then sync in post-production using my car horn as a reference point.
Honestly though under the hood with these turbo 1series sounds wimpy compared to an M3...here's a sound file I made on my blue BMW 135 with it's N55. Recorded on a Zoom H4N (pro audio recorder) inside the engine compartment. I found that putting the mike in the back of the car (battery compartment) gives a better deeper rumble without wind noise. If you ever put a mike outside the car, make sure you gaffer tape some foam around it and tape it securely to the car.

I'm looking for a new mic now. My plan is to fashion a mount using the rear tow hook. I love the way my 1er sounds on the overrun, an engine bay mic wouldn't pick that up.

Is anyone using the WiFi back pack with their smart phone to control the camera(s). ?

The Hero3 has support built in (at least the black edition does). The iPhone control is fantastic, so far my favorite feature. It seems to burn thought battery power quicker but I'll gladly buy extras for the ability to easily control the camera.

Just ordered a Cravenspeed GoPro Camera Mount. I liked the modular design, I plan to also use it to mount a mic at the rear tow hook.

Wouldn't it be awesome to rig our cars with cameras up front and rear and then do some laps on the 'ring where we pass each other back and forth and actually make it appear we are racing...then film each car leading the pack under the gantry so we all get our hero shot/film

So long as the cameras aren't mounted externally, it just might work. There's talk that they're going to ease restrictions on taking video at the 'Ring.

I just got my Audio-Technica Pro24-CM in the mail today, the "dead cat" came in on Monday. Hopefully I can figure out a way to mount the mic. Too bad the weather is turning to crap just in time for the weekend...
