My car is a 2008 128i coupe. Did you check the pins on the X14087 connectors under the glovebox as described in the e82 guide? On my car, before I repinned them, the 'yellow', 'black', and 'screen' wires did not connect to each other. Once I repinned them so that they connected through this connector, the mic worked.

Repinning the connector took me quite a while to figure out. I'm sorry to say that I did it a couple of month ago so I can't tell you exactly how the connector came apart. I think there were two little latches that you could releaese/pry open with a small screwdriver. Then you could pull the wires out of the connector and move them to new locations. The bluetooth pdf file says to move the yellow wire from pin x to pin y, etc. I couldn't see any labels on the connector to determine which pin number was which, so I just moved the yellow, black, and screen wires on one half of the connector so that they now make contact with the corresponding wires on the other half.

ok so the cable WAS the problem....surprised the bone head dealer didn't notice that, or even check. BUT it didn't go well. I got one pin out and two broke off...so ended up bypassing the connector and just hardwiring them together and it WORKED! So thank you everyone for the help, especially thank you to Mike.Beale.
