Strange Noises Discussion

Let's help each other figure out some noises our cars make. Like all cars, ours are aging, and will slowly develop a strange assortment of squeaks, rattles, thuds, hisses, etc. Let's put our heads together and keep our Ultimate Driving machines just that, and not Ultimate Rattling machines...

I'll start. There is a sort of off/on hissing-type sound as I walk by the passenger-side A-pillar. I can hear it better the closer I am to the ground. Any guesses?

This would be a tough thread to maintain unless you plan to document all the noises in the first post?

Hissing by the A-pillar is likely HVAC.

A weird rattle like sound from the rear seat area when I go over un smooth surfaces that drives me nuts and goes away when I try to find it

Ive got a minor rattle from the dash. Lower left corner to the right of the HVAC controls. Planning on pulling the dash apart to try and address it but it seems like a lot of work, and its intermittent anyways.

Rattle sounds like it’s coming from behind the gauge cluster or possibly closer to the engine bay. Only hear it on uneven roads/bumps. Almost sounds like pistachio or something is caught under the dash. My best guess is something with the suspension. Just too lazy and have no idea how to start looking for it

I'll post for my sisters 1ner. Convertible module rattles over any rough road. Sounds like its coming from the glass. If I put pressure on it from the back seat, the rattle suppresses.

Any ideas?

But yeah, those sounds are cool! Drive with the windows down so I can hear 'em even better.

As far as any other strange or unusual noises... none, zero.

I will add (to stay on track) that my previous 1er had a very annoying rattle at the back of the headliner, where it meets the rear window. Was never able to fix that. It really bugged. Whenever I went over the slightest imperfection in the road I'd hear it.

I turn on my ac.. and it seems like the air filter pops when its on for about 5 mins.. maybe the suction in there idk..

Mine does this, but usually only when it's sat in the garage, unlocked while I was working on it. It sounds like a valve opening/closing...

Light, rapid rattle from beneath my steering wheel (since my airbag was replaced). Something lightly tapping against the bottom of the column cowling. It's irritating as hell.

Take it back, I assume the stealer has some Warranty on their service...

Yes, definitely take it back. Haven't heard of that happening with this recall (so far) so let's hope that's some kind of one-off and not going to be a common occurrence.

I only get weird noises when I have passengers, so I just turn up the radio and can not hear them screaming anymore.

This. Had this as well but either it has diminished over the years or I have gotten use to it.

don't you all hate the creaks and pops of like the center console when u place your arm on it?? I know this is not 1er specific but damn I hate that shit.. or like the flexing of the roof when u come out of a gas station that gas a slope and the car is like unleveled...

My dashboard squeaks and rattles SOOO much when it's cold. I simply bump it and it's like taking those foam peanuts to a metal door, ouch...

I used a little WD-40 on the center console hinge a few years ago and the squeaks went away and never came back.
