Clearing 128i o2 CEL

Hey all

Im new to e82's (formerly an e30 owner) and the pervious owner has installed catless headers that are throwing an amber CEL light presumably for an 02 code.
Car runs great aside from the annoying cel on the dash.

My original plan was to do a big maintenance service and while Im in there, do the 3stage IM, MILVS plus tune to clear that CEL in addition to a 3.73 diff.

I could still spend the money for these power mods but for $1500-2k CDN to give the car a bit of a bump in performance Im beginning to wonder whether I could just hold off on that and just do all the maintenance instead (maybe invest the difference in money into suspension instead). I like the car as is so I wouldnt be too upset if I dont do the power mods right away.

So my question is what sort if options are there for getting rid of that CEL? $650 USD seems fairly pricey to me to buy a StageFP tune for the catless headers, but if that is the most reliable option I guess I may as well do everything at once.

Also, I noticed
Any info is much appreciated

My understanding is the only way to get rid of the CEL from catless headers is a tune. If there was another way, people would run catless headers with no tune a lot more. But like you're experiencing, w/o a tune the CEL is annoying.

I would definitely suggest getting on top of the maintenance before investing more in power mods or even suspension. Once that's all sorted then you can put the money into one or the other. The key to a headache free BMW ownership experience is preventative maintenance, which I'm sure you're aware of coming from an E30 - but even more so with these newer cars.

I can only say good things about the guys at Stage FP and their tunes. The 650 for their tune is a steal, their support is great, and your car gets the gains from the headers being installed. The diff is a great idea, but if me I'd try to find a way to make it LSD first. Nice tuned motor with a real LSD is a good start. Decide from there on the next step.

If you’re on the island or in the lower mainland, you might wanna check with RPM Motorsport in Victoria for a tuning option. You’ll need one to permanently eliminate the CEL. Just waiting to see what my final exhaust setup is gonna be before I order - we’ve talked (a lot), they understand the car and (at least for the arrangement I’ve made) are anticipating several iterations to get it right.

Bimmergeeks ProTool app new version has a much improved user interface and if you’re headed down the rabbithole of tuning/suspension/lsd, I’d highly recommend it for your toolbox also.

I’m not sure how folks run a 3.73 diff. My untuned car with lsd will break the rear loose in both 1 and 2 when DSC is off AND it’s still rolling along at almost 3k rpm when on the highway. Each to their own, but I’d save the diff swap until the end. Enjoy!

Thanks for the help everyone. If a tune is the best way to clear the CEL, I may as well go all in an do the 3SI and MILVS. Might even try and do a before and after Dyno run.
