The 150 limiter is for social responsibility or something. Because driving 165 is unacceptable, but 150 is OK :iono:. The official line might be that the chassis isn't stable enough above 150, or the engine will overheat or some other BS, but nobody's fooled. In Europe the dealer will happily remove the limiter, just not publicly. |

Hmmm - so if you don't get the all season tires, you could possibly get the dealer to remove the 130 mph limiter without getting the sport package?

the Procede can disable it just a few extra wires and it's officially just for dyno use.

Top Speed Limiter
I asked the dealer and he stated that the car had to be equipped with the Sports Package to have the top speed increased to 150 mph. Different pieces of BMW literature that I have seen seem to be unclear about this issue. However, the recent test in Car and Driver magazine on a 135 with the Sports Package lists the top speed of that car as 146 (going by memory). I cannot believe that the 135 cpe will only go that fast, so it may be that BMW wants to hold down the top speed either for legal reasons or to keep it from competing with their other more expensive cars. Think I would be pretty upset if a 135 ran just as fast as my new M3 or even my 335, don't you?
I think we will have to wait for a few more car magazines to test the 135 to find out the top speed even with the sports package. My stock '95 M3 with only 240 hp ran up to 143 mpg indicated before the limiter slowed it down to 139 mph, so with 300 hp, I would think the 135 would go a bit faster than that. My guess is actual top speed of around 160 mph. |

Also curious as the the lmiter removal. I've read on the Dinan site saying they also remove that limiter. I hear procede might, any other way to remove it, via tune or anything else?

On my Monroney Window Sticker, it listed "Increased Top Speed" as a part of the Sports Package... I've seen pictures here os it saying that is part of the Sports Package as well. I think this "mystery" had been solved for the 135i a little bit ago.
Are there pics of 128i Monroney stickers for cars that have ZSP? |

That autoblog dude that posts at bimmerfest was consistently able to hit the limiter at an indicated 151 mph...which apparently corresponds to about 144mph by gps on a couple of 335s and 328s. Couple of other folks backed him up, more or less.
link is here. Think the jist of the thread was that the limiter kicks in at indicated speeds and actual speeds vary slightly. |

I got mine up to 141mph (GPS) on the Autobahn. But I had the sports package so it'd be at 150 regardless. It was still fun as hell to see for myself how fast the car can go.

I hit 153 indicated on the Autobahn several times. Still relatively low RPM in 6th gear, somewhere around 4000-4500 if I remember correctly, so it still has a ways to go with no limiter. Even if it did go 170 I don't know I would want to drive it that fast, unless it was under ideal conditions. It does have a tendency to float on rough surfaces over 140 or so ad this is not a very comfortable feeling on a freeway with traffic.

My governor kicked in at 155mph. The momentum got me up to 159mph. I was on a slight decline going over a bridge in the express lanes in Seattle. I have never driven that fast and most likely will never do it again.

Speed Limiter Question
I think the key to this question, or at least one question, is that the limiter apparently works off of the indicated speed, not the actual speed. If that is correct, then the actual speed with the Sports Package would seem to be about what Car & Driver reported in their test...146 mph which was probably and indicated 150 mph. However, we still don't know if the 135 which already comes with the sports suspension and performance tires is also limited to 130 mph or will it carry the 150 mph limiter? It seems that most of the guys posting here have ordered the sports package, so we need someone without it to let us know. I did not order the sports package myself as I can't see paying $1,000 for the M logo on the steering wheel and sports seats and maybe the higher speed limiter. I guess I will have to wait to find out myself after my car arrives (crimson red, savanna beige, burl walnut, Ipod/USB adapter, HD radio, 6 spd manual).

I believe its a RPM limiter and not a speed limiter. I know on my friends stock M3 with a different gear ratio and final drive, he hits 175+ mph using his stock motor.
Correct me if I am wrong but I think BMW limits the max number of RPM's in 5th or 6th gear, thus limiting your speed.

I concur, just did a few blasts to ~153 MPH indicated on the Autobahn today as well. Thought I would hit the governor, so didn't push it any further (plus, I wussed out). |

Gouge from the Source
i'm in italy and have a friend who works for pentagon car sales in germany selling exclusively to military and diplomats overseas in a bmw-direct program. known this guy for eight years and he's always given me the right gouge. the 135i does come with a speed limiter around 130 mph. the sport package increases that to 250 kph INDICATED (155 mph). the faster you go, the more actual speeds are thrown off. anyway, the official response from bmw (as one of your repliers eluded to) is that a gentlemen's agreement exists between bmw, mercedes and audi to limit their vehicles (except the exotics) to 250 kph, indicated. some european dealers may remove that electronic limiter for you, but not all will be willing to do so. the language in u.s. market brochures and web pages (bmwusa.com) makes it tough to understand that without the sport package, even a 135i with the tuned suspension and sport tires will be limited to ~130 mph. my friend's advice is to pony up $1000 for the seats, if nothing else. i've ordered a 135i with sport pkg and ipod kit in black sapphire with glacier silver aluminum trim. 6-spd manual transmission, of course!! delivered price for military overseas in naples is $33,400.

so is that the final answer ?
Cuz I hit 250 KM/H on the speedo without Sport package which translate to 155MPH ... assuming the speedo is not accurate I was probably going 150MPH. If in fact my car is limited to 130MPH, the general consenus here, that would mean I was only going 209KM/H. So.... the speedo is off by like 40 KM/H then ? WTF:iono:
