Bob is the oil guy...
I haven't had time to read the whole thing, but the guys over on this site take their lubrication very seriously.
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...&Number=981162 EDIT: I read the whole thing. Unfortunately no consensus quite yet from the technocrats on what oil is best to run in "the oil cooker" N54 engine. Seems to destroy the Castrol/BMW supplied 5w30 pretty quickly...no way would I run that garbage in a new motor for 15k miles! A few brave dudes are using the Castrol 10w60 "M" oil with what might be interpreted as positive results. I suspect Ester based oils might be the ticket for this engine, seeing as they're renowned for their high-heat stability. Redline is the only shelf brand I know of that uses Ester basestock...common knowledge among oil geeks. Dont take this as a recommedation or endorsement of their products however. The only thing I recommend is not to listen to BMW's oil change interval suggestions. |

People on E90 have sent in oil analysis every few thousand miles and 10,000 seems to be a good time to change out, so I plan on splitting the difference at around 7,500 miles and having the next one on BMW.

When to change your oil seems to be a very controversial topic, and most threads I have seen on the subject get pretty heated.
To head this off, does anyone have any studies/data/graphs/pcitures etc. they can share that shows some real data on the subject? Here's an interesting article I found: http://www.catherinesautorepair.com/news.html |

Check these guys out; they designed a high performance oil specifically for the engine in the new Audi RS-4...wholly funded by an actual RS-4 owner! (Talk about the halls of geekdom here)
http://www.renewablelube.com/ I thought the M3 link at the bottom was interesting too. Maybe the BMW community could get these guys working on the perfect oil for the N54 engine? |

I have a simple program:
Dino Oil every 3k Full Synthetic every 5k I don't care if the oil will last longer or it's a waste of money, it's about removing crap from your engine. BMW's 7-10k oil changes whenever they have to be done in between.

I dont think I would let the OCI go any longer than 5k miles or 6 months in a modern turbocharged engine, if it were my own car.
I likely would dump the factory fill at 500 miles and then again at 1500-2000 miles, then switch to something better than the BMW/Castrol oil once it hits 5,000. Theres lots of wear material floating around in there when an engine is new, which is absolutely not a controversy. |

I always change the factory fill at 1500. I like to remove any wear particles.

I just bought a case of German Castrol 0-30W in anticipation of the 1500 early change--wish I had the car to go with the oil.

I used to change the initial fill at 1000. But with mfg's adding break in additives these days it's better to wait until 1,500.

Does anyone know what BMW is recommending in terms of the 1 series oil change interval? Do they require a change at 1500k then the service interval indicator there after?
My current 325ci, I always changed around 7500. Every other change was on me. I was worried at the long interval BMW was recommending. When I get my 1er I want to treat it the best I can as I am planning on keeping it a long time. |

Motul 300V is based on two types of esters, with maybe some pao mixed in there. It has a whole lot of moly too, around 800 ppm (Mobil 1 has around 100 ppm). Not too sure if all that moly would be good for this engine, definitely not good for brake in. Their 8100 e-tech and e-tech lite oils are also ester based, with almost no moly.

You would assume BMW knows what they are doing regarding oil changes right? Then change the oil between BMW's schedule. That's usually what I do. ...but I am not waiting until 5,000 miles to change the initial fill.

Sounds great but what if you use your preferred brand of oil then BMW does the scheduled maintenance and puts their stuff back in? I guess changing it more often is more important than worrying about which brand is used.
