Run in service

When you guys start to take your cars in for the 1200 mile service be sure you ask your service advisor if they have the right transmission fluid. Apparently it is not the same as the M3. It is a new formula and not kept in stock unless the dealer actually knows about it and has some on hand.

My car is sitting on the rack at the dealer now and it will sit there until they can get the correct fluid from Germany.

Is it MTF-LT4 ?

That is what I used in my 135i 6MT tranny.

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=409293

The rear diff fluid should be the same as the M3's = Castrol SAF-XJ
I used the SAF-XJ bc it is backwards compatible in non LSD trans too.

I thought i read in the supplemental maintenance manual that the transmission fluid is not suppossed to be changed as part of the run-in service. My dealer changed mine as part of the run-in service and since i did not find out until after the fact, i just let it go. Now after reading your post i think i will check back with them to make sure the they used the right transmission fluid. Thanks for the heads-up!!

FYI... the 1M has the SAME trans as the 2011 & '12, N55 135i has. It shouldn't be that hard to get the proper fluid.

Hi guys i read somewhere that the 1M tranny was completly reworked to that of the 135's and had different parts inside in order to cut down on friction problems.

i read that too - they said something like additional dry sump - (dont know the english word maybe dry sump lubrication or greasing?)

but maybe the transmission being exclusive was just another marketing saying like valencia organge would be exclusive

Yes.. i remember reading that the engagement of the gears were made smoother so i personally believe that the whole thing has been looked at and improved on. Im not sure BMW would lie and as for the exclusive VO colour well who knows what will happen when it is released. Perhaps it will have a lighter shine or metalic compound on the other model thereby making 1M colour exclusive still. Maybe thats just wishful thinking on my part. Surely we could have them for false advertising though if they were found to be lying.

Maybe a quick email from a few members to germany might get a response on this matter.

Can you point me at official BMW publication where they said VO would be exclusive only to the M1 - interesting.

I think you misunderstood me a little (the problem with internet forums - we expect to see sarcasm!). What I meant was really, I'd love to see it if they did promise exlusivity - be an interesting conversation to have with dealer and product manager...

Transmission was revised for 2011. The 1M has the same tranny as the one on 2011 models. This is also confirmed by part numbers.

Actually, BMW never said the 1M trans would be exclusive either! Just like the paint, you read into it what you wanted to believe.

The 1M trans does have low friction syncros and has been reworked. But it is also shared with the "normal" 135i as well. Dry sump... I dunno... ?

I believe all N55's has this new improved trans. I thought that is also why the Perf SSK doesn't work on a N55 or a 1M - bc of this new trans and its new shift linkage..

My dealer just called to tell me to bring the car in and they would store it for 2-3 weeks while they wait for the correct fluid. They did the 1200 mile service almost 3 weeks ago and I've put about 1K miles on it as well as 1 track day. Awesome! They will be covering my transmission for an extended period if I have anything to do with it.

Here's the memo:

To: BMW Service Managers, Shop Foremen, and Technicians

Subject: 1 Series M Coupe 1200 Mile Service – Manual Transmission MTF LT5 Fluid Not Available

The 1 Series M Coupe requires a manual transmission fluid change. Due to a shortage of the new MTF LT5 manual transmission fluid, this specific service should not be performed until further notice. The other procedures for the 1200 mile service can be performed.

Do not substitute MTF LT5 fluid with any other fluid.

No premature wear will occur to the manual transmission if the fluid is not changed at the 1200 miles service.

We apologize for this inconvenience, and will provide additional information shortly.
