Oil Change after 1200 miles?
I know this is recommended for all the M cars, have anyone done this w/ their 1er. I've always done this w/ all my cars but a friend was telling me it would be a waist of money
has anyone done this and sent their oil for analysis? |

It is only worth while if you plan to keep the car beyond the end of the warranty. Since I do want to keep my 135i for many years, I did a 1200 mile oil change along with changing the gear box and differential fluids. I will change the oil twice a year.

I changed the oil and filter at 1200 miles and sent it Blackstone Labs for analysis. It had quite a bit of iron, aluminum, copper, magnesium, potassium, and manganese in the oil. Not unusual for a new engine. I will get a sample at 5,000 miles when it is changed by the dealer. I intend to keep the 128i for a long time so I would really like to know if the engine is showing unexpected wear before the warranty runs out.

Is there a list of proper oil viscosities and additives to use for the manual gearbox and differential? I am going to do the "break-in oil change" and would also like to clean out the rest of the drivetrain as well.

$100 can buy an awful lot of "peace of mind". I recommend doing it.

I change my oil every 6-7K miles. Im also doing transmission and differential at 30K. Shouldve done it sooner, but cash and college have gotten in the way.
I think thats why my drivetrain is the only thing that hasnt been screwed up on my car. |

They are not cheap at the dealer. My gearbox change cost $250 and the differential change cost $107. I'm sure an independent would be less expensive, but why risk the warranty? I'll do the gearbox and differential again at 30K miles.
