At my first appointment...Disconcerting

I mentioned long cranks, odd rpm fiuctuation, etc. I was told that it could be that the car isn't driven enough causing a bad battery and thus the long cranks. Better yet, they have to charge a diag fee if this is the case. Also, if they don't find a problem, I get charged a fee. I assume this is CYA? That's the worst service pitch I've had anywhere. Is this typical??

Oh yeah, they said that my dealer (on the east coast) probably let it sit too long. I ordered the car custom and it wasn't started for a max of 4 days while it was shipped to me.

Four days is nothing. My 128i routinely sits for 2 weeks and starts immediately. And while on vacation with the 1er, my '99 328i with a 5 year old battery is parked for 4 weeks and also starts right up .

If your battery is bad, it sounds like it should be replaced under warranty - and maybe if your dealer throws enough new parts at it (on their dime), they might discover your problem.

Good luck.

everything they have told you is BS, there is no diagnostic fee for warranty service, take it to another dealer and contact BMW NA if necessary

Thanks guys. I still haven't heard from them since I dropped the car off. I know it is fuel pump/system related especially with the ECU codes that are stored, I'm just not used to this approach coming from any brand in the past, warranty or not.

Just got a call - dealer needs the car until tomorrow at least. They sent the diagnostics over to BMW and opened a PUMA case or whatever.

I guess it's not the battery

Hahaha I love PUMA cases....it pretty much means they need advisement on how to fix the car from the BMW brain trust....

Had an electronics problem on a BMW motorcycle which mystified my dealer. Once they involved PUMA, it was promptly sorted out under warranty - but I'd still like to know what the acronym stands for.

thought they didnt have to file for a fuel pump since its such a common problem? i thought more serious things like a blown turbo and stuff required that.

my SR is awesome, and absolutely the best ive dealt with. a fee for trying to figure out why your new hardly driven car? sounds like a load of BS, never would expect garbage like that from any dealer. especially a BMW one.

Dealer needs the car another day (tomorrow will be day 3) and they are replacing the fuel pump. "It's not an easy repair" they say.

Cool, but too bad it's going to just happen again

DUDE, This is the worst service I've ever had at a car dealership. I went to pick up the ride today and I get 3 surprises.

1) 12 miles left in the tank, so the fuel icon is on.
2) My FN'ing car has been washed even though they put a red sign in my car stating "DO NOT WASH".
3) My SES light was on.

I pulled the car right back in and went to a new SA (my original wasn't there) and told him the light was on. He went and started the car and for whatever reason the light was off now. He snidely remarked "keep driving low on fuel and you'll be in here for another fuel pump". F that man, if a car can't drive low on gas, its not designed well. It's just ludicrous. And second, it wasn't like that when i dropped it off. How well would that have gone over?

Lastly, SWIRL MARKS all over the car. What do I do aside from call and complain? My car has NEVER been washed by anyone other than me or a pro detailer prior. Not when I took delivery, not ever. I spent a lot of money keeping it as nice I as I could.

P.S. For those who care, here was what was on my invoice:

Performed short test, found DME 2FBF. Performed low and high pressure fuel tests, no faults found. Performed SIB 12 55 06, found pressure backbleeding from HDP valve. Low pressure system at 5 bar then up to 6.5 bar, HDP failure. RI intake manifold, rr HDP, reassembled vehicle, performed tc diag test drive, rechecked faults, none, all OK.

Parts: 13-51-7-592-881 HPHF
13-53-7-582-770 ASA-Bolt

welcome to my world. My left front tire had been slowly leaking air and they wont fix it under the warranty. I go to the dealer every few wks to address my problem, but no one cares. So who should i call to get noticed and have my left front tire replaced?

Ask to speak to the general manager of the service dept. and explain your situation in detail with a firm hand, also write an e-mail about the poor customer service you've received but don't send it; bring a copy with you when you meet the the General Manager saying that if this issue is not fixed that you'll be forced to send this to BMWNA and the owner of the dealership.

Don't back down and make sure it's the last time you use that dealership.

P.S. a HPFP change is a one day install and they keep it over night to test it for cold start... I know I've gone thru 4 of them between two cars.
